EVR 4027 Wetland Environments Online

Capstone Research Experience 03 Assignment: Wetland Classification

In this part of the third capstone research experience, you will be classifying wetlands using the Cowardin et al.
system. As this is an online section of the course, you will classify wetlands by doing virtual site visits using Google
Street View.
The table below lists the site name and the link to the site. The links provided for each wetland will take you
directly into the ‘Street View’ for each wetland. You can rotate and zoom in and out using your mouse. You can
exit Street View by clicking the left arrow on the screen:

.
Once you exit Street View, you can further zoom out to see where the site is located, as that might help you
determine if the wetland is coastal or inland and help you classify the wetland. You can return to Street View by
dropping the orange man icon onto the desired location, or by clicking on the direct link again.
Your objective is to determine the SYSTEM, SUBSYSTEM (if applicable), and any CLASSES present. You can use the
classification flow chart as a guide. You do not need to identify and SUBCLASSES, HYDROLOGICAL REGIMES (more
information would be necessary to make that determination), SPECIAL MODIFIERS, etc. Record the information in
the spaces provided in the table. You will also be asked to explain why you made each choice, citing any evidence
you see in Street View. For example, if you assigned a site as belonging to the LACUSTRINE SYSTEM, you might say
you made that selection because the site is a large lake with deep water. Please note that not all SYSTEMS will be
used, as we are only focusing on wetlands, and not rivers or deep water habitats. Also, describe any human
impacts apparent at each wetland. When you have completed the table, upload your word document for grading.
