HOMESCHOOLING
Anabel A. Lima
HOMESCHOOLING APPROACHES
No two families homeschool in exactly the same way, but there are certain
homeschooling methods, or “styles”, that are more popular than others,
for example: the relaxed / eclectic method, the school-at-home method,
unschooling, the classical method and other methods based on the Multiple
Intelligences Theory and Waldorf or Montessori pedagogies.
Relaxed/Eclectic
Relaxed or eclectic homeschooling is the method used most often by
homeschoolers. Basically, eclectic homeschoolers use a little of this and a
little of that, using workbooks for math, reading, and spelling, and taking an
unschooling approach for the other subjects.
For the family who practices relaxed or eclectic homeschooling, mornings are
often used for more formal, compulsory work, and afternoons are used for
hobbies and other special projects. There are no specific times set up for each
subject, but instead the child is expected to meet certain educational goals.
School-at-Home
Most families who follow the school-at-home approach purchase boxed
curriculum that comes with textbooks, study schedules, grades and record
keeping. Some families use the school-at-home approach, but make up their
own lesson plans and find their own learning materials.
The advantage of this style is that families know exactly what to teach and
when to teach it. That can be a comfort when you are just starting out. The
disadvantage is that this method requires much more work on the part of the
teacher/parent and the lessons are not as much fun for the children.
15
Unschooling
Unschooling is also known as natural, interest-led, and child-led learning.
Unschoolers learn from everyday life experiences and do not use school
schedules or formal lessons. Instead, unschooled children follow their
interests and learn in much the same way as adults do by pursuing an interest
or curiosity. In the same way that children learn to walk and talk, unschooled
children learn their math, science, reading and history.
Classical
The “Classical”approach has existed since the Middle Ages and has produced
some of the greatest minds in history. The goal of the classical approach is
to teach people how to learn for themselves. The five tools of learning, known
as the Trivium, are Reason, Record, Research, Relate and Rhetoric. Younger
children begin with the preparing stage, where they learn the three R’s. The
grammar stage is next, which emphasizes compositions and collections, and
then the dialectic stage, where serious reading, study and research take place.

pregunta ¿cómo es? Aquí se incluyen tamaños, colores, características de
personalidad, etc. Ejemplos: important, eclectic, fundamental, intensive, etc.
FRASE PREPOSICIONAL
Es la parte de la oración que tiene como núcleo una preposición: of, from, since,
for, about, with, without, etc. Estas frases pueden contener sustantivos. Las frases
preposicionales expanden el significado del sustantivo que preceden. Algunos
ejemplos de frases preposicionales son: for a year (por un año), with my mother (con
mi madre), from Argentina (de Argentina).

MARIA MONTESSORI
Academic, Educator (1870–1952)
Maria Montessori was born on August 31, 1870, in the provincial town
of Chiaravalle, Italy, to middle-class, well-educated parents. Montessori
graduated with high honors from the medical school of the University of 29
Rome in 1896. She became the first female doctor in Italy. As a doctor, she
worked with developmentally disabled children. She observed that intrinsic
intelligence was present in children of all socio-economic backgrounds.
Montessori became the director of the Orthophrenic School for in 1900.
There she began to extensively research early childhood development and
education. Montessori began to conceptualize her own method of applying
their educational theories, which she tested through hands-on scientific
observation of students at the Orthophrenic School. Montessori found the
resulting improvement in students’ development remarkable.
Montessori’s success with developmentally disabled children spurred her
desire to test her teaching methods on “normal” children. Montessori was placed
in charge of 60 students from the slums, ranging in age from 1 to 6. The school,
called Casa dei Bambini (or Children’s House), enabled Montessori to create the
“prepared learning” environment she believed was conducive to sense learning
and creative exploration. Teachers were encouraged to stand back and “follow
the child”—that is, to let children’s natural interests take the lead. Over time,
Montessori tweaked her methods through trial and error. Her writings further
served to spread her ideology throughout Europe and the United States.
By 1925 more than 1,000 of her schools had opened in America. Gradually
Montessori schools fell out of favor; by 1940 the movement had faded and
only a few schools remained. Once World War II began, Montessori was forced
to flee to India, where she developed a program called Education for Peace.
Her work with the program earned her two Nobel Peace Prize nominations.
Montessori died on May 6, 1952, in Noordwijk aan Zee, Netherlands.
The 1960s witnessed a resurgence in Montessori schools, led by Dr. Nancy
McCormick Rambusch. Today, Montessori’s teaching methods continue to
“follow the child” all over the globe.

CREATIVITY
Creativity is another highly complex construct. Creativity, lilte intelligence. is
culturally specific—it is defined and determined by one’s culture. What may
be seen as creative activity in one culture may not be viewed as creative in a
different culture. Many theorists who studied intelligence also investigated
creativity. One reason is that creativity is a combination of divergent thinking
processes. Divergent thinking involves starting with an idea and going in
various directions with it to come up with possibly more than one idea.
Creativity is essentially a form of problem solving that involves problems for
which there are no easy answers. The results of the creative process lead to
something that addresses the problem in perhaps a new and original way.
Thinking skills that are utilized in creative thought include (Starko 1997;
Torrance 1976):
• Fluidity. or brainstorming ideas
• Flexibility by looking at problems from different perspectives
34
• Elaboration, or building on or using an idea in a different way
• Originality, or finding something new or different
When students enter elementary school, they already have many learning
skills that they acquired through questioning, inquiring. searching,
manipulating. experimenting, and playing. All of these activities involve
creative thinking. Most students prefer to learn in creative ways, and when
creativity is incorporated into curricula and instruction, students often learn
more efficiently (Starko 1997: Torrance 1977).

According to Eric Jensen, in his best seller “Brain based learning”, the brain is
not designed for extended periods of attention. To make the learning meaningful,
students need to break from the eternal attention paid to the teacher and “go
internal” to process the data.
Students should have a kinesthetic brain break every 25-30 minutes. Brain
breaks are refreshing to students and teachers as well! They help get students
refocused and energized, since blood flow to the brain increases and enables
more learning.
BEM PRINCIPLE
Psychologists have this concept of BEM that is about how people are most
likely to recall information. BEM stands for Beginning, End and Middle. This
means that your students will remember best the information they learned first,
followed by the information they learned last and will remember the least the
information in the middle.

ABSTRACT 1
Abstract
This study examined classroom practices of effective versus less
effective teachers (based on student achievement gain scores in reading
and mathematics). In Phase I of the study, hierarchical linear modeling
was used to assess the teacher effectiveness of 307 fifth-grade
teachers in terms of student learning gains. In Phase II, 32 teachers
(17 top quartile and 15 bottom quartile) participated in an in-depth
cross-case analysis of their instructional and classroom management
practices. Classroom observation findings (Phase II) were compared
with teacher effectiveness data (Phase I) to determine the impact of
selected teacher behaviors on the teachers’ overall effectiveness drawn
from a single year of value-added data.

ABSTRACT 2
Abstract
Although significant advances have been made in our understanding
of the neural basis of learning and memory over the past hundred
years, the translation of these neuroscientific insights into classroom
teaching practice has been very limited. In this review, we discuss
the historical development of pedagogy, cognitive psychology,
and the neuroscience of learning over the past century, and how
these separate disciplines are now combining in the new field of
educational neuroscience. We examine the successes and promises
of this emerging field, but also discuss the considerable practical
and conceptual difficulties that face educational neuroscientists who
have to be constantly vigilant to “mind the gap.”
ABSTRACT 3
Abstract
We tested the hypothesis that encoding the numerical–spatial relations
in a number board game is a key process in promoting learning from
playing such games. Experiment 1 used a microgenetic design to
examine the effects on learning of the type of counting procedure that
children use. As predicted, having kindergartners count-on from their
current number on the board while playing a 0–100 number board
game facilitated their encoding of the numerical–spatial relations on
the game board and improved their number line estimates, numeral
identification, and count-on skill. Playing the same game using the
standard count-from-1 procedure led to considerably less learning.
Experiment 2 demonstrated that comparable improvement in number
line estimation does not occur with practice encoding the numerals
1–100 outside of the context of a number board game. The general
importance of aligning learning activities and physical materials with
desired mental representations is discussed.
