Flexible working pattern – interns may wish to work mornings or afternoons.


Wednesdays and Fridays are busy at the Garden, so quieter days are Monday,
Tuesday and Thursday.

Job description Treborth Botanic Garden (http://treborth.bangor.ac.uk) comprises 18 hectares of


conservation woodland, cultivated gardens and glasshouse exotic collections
located on the southern shore of the Menai Strait. It has 2,500 species of native
and introduced plants, and abundant wildlife including red squirrels.
The Garden’s communications strategy uses print, broadcast and social media to
raise awareness and secure support for Garden plans, developments and
activities. The Social Media Intern will be helped by Garden staff and volunteers to
gather and contribute news and promotional material to the Garden website, a
regular blog and a quarterly newsletter, and to platforms including Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram. The intern will help to create the Garden’s formal social
media policy and prepare a media events calendar. She/he will also liaise with the
University’s translation unit where Welsh language assistance is required.

During his/her placement, the student will also be welcome to become involved in
the regular day-to-day activities of the Garden alongside the team of staff and
volunteers, e.g. plant husbandry, watering, propagation, pruning, weeding,
feeding, pest control, use of machinery (in accordance with health and safety
protocols), event management, volunteer coordination, budgeting and fundraising
etc.

The Intern will work from the office of the Friends of Treborth Botanic Garden, in
the teaching laboratory building at the University Botanic Garden. Students will
have full access to the library, Wi-Fi, kitchen and bathroom facilities in the
attractive setting of the Garden beside the Menai Strait. The Garden has dedicated
parking and is situated on a bus route, between the University main campus and
the School of Ocean Sciences at Menai Bridge. Garden staff will provide the
Summer Intern with health and safety induction.

Person 1. Willingness to get to know (with training) the indoor and outdoor plant
requirements collections at Treborth, and carry out practical plant husbandry work
2. Familiarity with computing, social media and data storage/retrieval
3. Good English reading, writing and presentation skills
4. Ability to work well in a team, and independently as required
5. Reliability and commitment to work the hours required by the internship, within
the flexible regime at the Garden
6. Interest in the natural world and plants/horticulture
7. Welsh language is desirable for this internship
