Data collection is an organised and methodical way of gathering information on

different methods of data collection, namely:

 Self-enumeration(this is when the respondents complete the questionnaire without the

assistance of an interviewer),
 Interview-assisted,(either through personal or telephone interviews),
 Direct observation,
 Electronic data reporting,
 Use of administrative data.

This assignment will be discussed in two parts:

1) Data Collection In Developing Countries

2) Data collection in developed countries

Data collection in developing countries

Many developing countries have weak statistical systems and mechanisms for measuring
results.

Good, reliable statistics are essential for measuring progress in reaching development goals
and provide essential information about the effectiveness of policies and programmes. They

help governments improve their policies and to be transparent and accountable about the
delivery of development results. Reliable statistics are a key element towards better
measurement, monitoring and management of the results of development assistance.

The problems faced by developing nations in generating reliable data can be classified
into two:

• Endogenous (within official statistics)

– Weaknesses of institutional set-up
– Weaknesses of organizational set-up
– Lack of resources, infrastructure
– Performance not up to the mark
• Exogenous
– Inability of civil society, of establishments and enterprises and even of
administration to part reliable and timely data
