G - TESTS W/CODES

1989 ENGINE PERFORMANCE Nissan Self-Diagnostics

INTRODUCTION

NOTE: It is important when diagnosing Nissan's ECCS that the proper diagnostic
routine be followed. See DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINE table for correct order of
procedure.

DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINE
DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINE
Procedure Order
Basic Diagnostic Procedures 1st
Entering Diagnostics 2nd
Retrieving Trouble Codes 3rd
Symptoms (1) 4th
Intermittents (1) 5th
(1) Symptoms and intermittents are covered in TESTS W/O CODES article.

NOTE: For additional information on self-diagnostic system, see THEORY/OPERATION

article.

If no faults were found while performing BASIC TESTING , proceed with ENTERING SELF-DIAGNOSTICS
in this article. If no fault codes or only pass codes are present, proceed to TESTS W/O CODES article for
diagnosis by symptom (i.e. ROUGH IDLE, NO START, etc.).

The self-diagnostic system is used for diagnosing malfunctions of major sensors and actuators of the Electronic
Concentrated Control System (ECCS). The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) has 5 available diagnostic modes
within the computer. Before selecting any mode of self-diagnosis, always perform BASIC TESTING first. This
will eliminate wasted diagnostic time and invalid diagnostic results.

NOTE: When performing BASIC TESTING , be careful not to erase any diagnostic
information stored in the ECU memory.

"CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT

California models are equipped with a "CHECK ENGINE" light. As a bulb check, light will illuminate when
the ignition is on and engine is not running. "CHECK ENGINE" light will also illuminate when an ECCS fault
has been detected, and a corresponding trouble code has been set in ECU memory. Not all trouble codes will
activate "CHECK ENGINE" light.

DIAGNOSTIC MODES
Five different diagnostic modes are available through the ECCS. Diagnostic modes 1 and 2 are used for
monitoring the air/fuel mixture ratio using LED inspection lights. Mode 3 is the self diagnostic system, used for
obtaining trouble codes for component or circuit failures. Mode 4 is used to determine if malfunction(s) are
present in the on/off controlled switches of the system. Mode 5 is the real time diagnostic system, used for
monitoring the system and its components during actual driving conditions, usually to simulate an intermittent
condition.

ECU LOCATION
The ECU is located under the passenger seat.

ENTERING SELF-DIAGNOSTICS
1. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position. On all models except Pathfinder and Pickup, use a screwdriver to
turn ECU diagnostic mode selector fully clockwise. On Pathfinder & Pickup, move ECU diagnostic mode
selector switch to "ON" position.
2. Wait for inspection lights to begin flashing. At this time, inspection lights will flash the mode options (i.e.
2 flashes for Mode 2, etc.). As soon as inspection light flashes the desired mode number (3 flashes for
Mode 3), immediately turn mode selector off.
3. If the mode selector is kept in the "ON" position, the mode selections will continuously cycle (Mode 1 to
Mode 2 up to Mode 5, then cycles to Mode 1, etc.) and the process will continue. This will not erase the
memory.

RETRIEVING CODES

NOTE: Mode 3 is used to retrieve trouble code(s) from the ECU self-diagnostic system.

Trouble codes are read using the Red and Green LED inspection lights on the side of the ECU. After selecting
mode 3, trouble codes corresponding to that mode will start flashing. Trouble codes are indicated by the number
of flashes from the ECU Red and Green LED inspection lights. Count the number of flashes. The Red LED
indicates the number of tens while the Green LED indicates the number of ones. For example, 3 flashes of the
Red LED followed by 2 flashes of the Green LED would indicate code 32.

TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION

TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION
Code (1) System Affected Probable Cause

22 Fuel Pump Open or shorted pump circuit

23 Idle Switch (2) Open signal circuit
25 Idle Speed Control (AAC Valve) Open or shorted AAC circuit
31 ECU Signals are beyond normal range
32 EGR Sensor (Calif.) No EGR action
33 Oxygen Sensor Open circuit or high O2 signal
35 EGR Temperature Sensor (Calif.) Open or shorted signal circuit
41 Air Temperature Sensor Open or shorted signal circuit
43 Throttle Sensor Open or shorted signal circuit
45 Injector Leak (Calif.) Leak at injector
51 Injector (Pathfinder & Pickup One injector does not function
VG30i)
55 No Malfunction Recorded Normal condition no faults
detected)
(1) Not all trouble codes will activate "CHECK ENGINE" light.

(2) See IDLE SWITCH testing in SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article.

"Hard Failures"

Hard failures cause "CHECK ENGINE" light (if equipped) to illuminate and remain on until the malfunction is
repaired. If light comes on and remains on (light may flash) during vehicle operation, cause of malfunction must
be determined using diagnostic (code) charts. If a sensor fails, control unit will use a substitute value in its
calculations to continue engine operation. In this condition, vehicle is functional, but loss of good driveability
will most likely be encountered.

"Intermittent Failures"

Intermittent failures may cause "CHECK ENGINE" light (if equipped) to flicker or illuminate and go out after
the intermittent fault goes away. The corresponding trouble code, however, will be retained in ECU memory. If
related fault does not reoccur within 50 starter operations, related trouble code will be erased from control unit
memory. Intermittent failures may be caused by sensor, connector or wiring related problems.

CLEARING CODES

NOTE: Ensure that all diagnostic codes are extracted from the ECU memory before
disconnecting battery or switching from Mode 3 into Mode 4.

MEMORY ERASE

Stored memory will be erased if battery is disconnected or Mode 4 is selected after Mode 3 has been accessed.
However, if mode selector switch is turned fully clockwise (on-off switch turned to "ON" position for
Pathfinder & Pickup), diagnostic modes will continue to cycle, from Mode 1 to 5, and will keep cycling in the
same order, until a certain mode is selected. This does not erase the stored memory.
