LECTURE 6

ROTATION

This DMP is represented by any turn or spin around an internal axis. There are three axis.
These are transverse, anterior / posterior and longitudinal axis.

TRANSVERSE AXIS

Run an imaginary stick from the left to the right hip and you have the transverse axis.
Rotations around the axis involve all turns forwards and backwards.

BACKWARD ROLL

a. Physical Preparation
Ø Tuck rocks to stand
Ø Tuck activities with ball
Ø Dish and tuck positions
Ø Bear walks
Ø Crab walks
Ø Partner sit-ups

b. Skill progressions / lead up drills


Ø Backward roll over shoulder
Ø Roll backs on floor
Ø Backward roll downhill

c. Common errors
Ø Lack of tuck position
Ø Opening the tuck during rotation\poor physical preparation in support
Ø Not tucking chin on chest

ROTATION

ANTERIOR / POSTERIOR AXIS

Run an imaginary stick in a straight line from your belly button through to your back and you
have the anterior – posterior axis. Rotations around this axis involve all sideways rotations.

CARTWHEELS

a. Physical Preparation
Ø Dish hold-arms down
Ø Wheelbarrow walks
Ø Heel extensions on box
Ø Crab flip to bear walks
Ø Front support walks
Ø Handstand on floor

b. Skill progressions / lead up drills


Ø Step over a small box or bench, progress to cartwheel
Ø Cartwheel in a circle
Ø Cartwheel through hoops
Ø Cartwheel downhill
Ø Cartwheel on raised surface
Ø Cartwheel quarter turn in between mats

c. Common errors
Ø Hands placed across the line of leg
Ø Hips close in support or on step down
Ø Chest out and shoulders close
Ø Kick does not go over the top of hands

Ø Side
Ø One hand on their lower back near the hip
Ø Other hand across body on other hip

KTPs

Ø Arms at ears
Ø Dominant foot forwards
Ø Finish standing up facing original starting point
