INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING & OR
Related to managing any business
For any business the imperatives are: 3Cs
• Customer
• Competition ( cost, time, market share, safety, profit,
quality productivity etc.,)
• Change
To be customer responsive and for being competitive,
Managing Change is very important :
IE‐ DEFINITION
Industrial engineering is a diverse discipline concerned
with the
• design,
• installation,
• improvement and
• management
of integrated systems of
organizations, people , equipment , materials, and
policies

OPERATIONS RESEARCH ‐ DEFINITION
O.R.: WHAT IS IT?
Operations research (O.R.) is the discipline
of applying analytical methods to
help make better decisions
The Focus is On :
Modeling real life problems
Optimization
Algorithms
Computation
ATTRACTIVENESS OF IE & OR
• Young engineers are enthralled with the
power and attractiveness of various
technologies
• It is imperative that the technologies are put
to best use.
• IE &OR helps realizing higher utility of
various technologies by deploying time
tested and innovative decision making tools.

CHARACTERISTICS OF IE & OR
• Systems Approach
• Analytical Approach
• Interdisciplinary Approach
• May appear to be bordering on common
sense and therefore easy to follow.
• But it is in essence, uncommon people sense
• Deals with real world problems
INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING & OPERATIONS
RESEARCH
Also Known as
• Management Science
• Systems Engineering
• Operations Management
• Quantitative methods for management
Applications
• Manufacturing systems
• Service systems like transportation, finance, health
care, energy, education etc.,
• Even Individuals
