Rationale for Standard 4: Content Knowledge
Artifact name: Water cycle Lesson
Standard:
The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the
discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the
discipline accessible and meaningful for learners.
What the Standard means to me:
The content knowledge is what drives the lessons, and the teacher needs to understand the
different concepts he/she is teaching. After it is understood what is being taught then it can be
implemented in a meaningful and accessible way for each learner.
Indicator:
4 (l) Knows and uses the academic language of the discipline and knows how to make it
accessible to learners.
Description of the artifact:
This was a lesson that I taught my second graders during our air and weather unit. We learned
about the different parts of a water cycle, how they work, and what they mean to our
environment. We learned about the different vocabulary words that are involved in the water
cycle and then we were able to show our knowledge by creating our own water cycle.
Rationale:
I am proficient in this standard and indicator because I had to do a lot of research on the water
cycle before teaching it, and I had to make sure I was going to explain the terms clearly
enough to the students so that they would understand. Since most of the words on the water
cycle are challenging I put the words on the board during the time they were making their
diagram, and I also made the words available to the students through a word bank on the exit
ticket. Since I am making these terms accessible for them, and also ensuring I explain them in
a way each learner can understand I am proficient in this standard and indicator.
