Rationale for Standard 8: Instructional Strategies
Artifact name: Teacher work sample assessment plan
Standard:
The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to
develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to access
and appropriately apply information.
What the Standard means to me:
The strategies that the teacher has in place when teaching are engaging and encouraging to
each of the learners. They help the learners go through different levels of thinking and get a
deeper understanding of what is being taught, by using things they can connect to.
Indicator:
8 (m) Understands how multiple forms of communication (oral, written, nonverbal, digital,
visual) convey ideas, foster self expression, and build relationships.
Description of the artifact:
The first chart in this artifact shows how each assessment aligns with the goals for my teacher
work sample. The second chart shows the type of assessment that is being implemented (pre,
formative, or summative), the tool that I was using to assess them, and the type of feedback I
provided to them after. Lastly, I have a short narrative about how I planned out the
assessments, the different tools I wanted to implement and my reasons for doing so. I also talk
about the students who typically get pulled out for the resource room and how I supported
them.
Rationale:
While I was planning for the assessments I was going to implement in the classroom I wanted
to make them engaging for the students, and I also wanted to provide multiple ways for the
students to show me what they know. I typically had two types of assessment for each lesson. I
used oral communication when the students shared their ideas with me and to the class. I used
multiple means of writing assignments by using exit tickets and writing prompts or free
writing about the weather. I also used visual when the students were creating crafts or
diagrams to convey their learning. I also made adjustments during the unit when I realized that
students really enjoyed writing their ideas out. I implemented more writing assignments than I
had originally planned for. The students in my classroom also really enjoy handson learning
and collaborating with their peers, so we did a lot of handson group activities or discussion
throughout this unit. Lastly, I supported the students who typically go out to the resource room.
If assessment or assignment was a writing or reading assignment I would group those students
together with me to give me the answers verbally instead of nonverbally. I quickly realized
that these students have a lot of knowledge on weather and that it is just harder for them to
express their ideas nonverbally. I show proficiency in this standard and indicator because of
the multiple ways I allowed my students to express their knowledge during this unit.
