Rationale for Standard 9: Reflection and Continous Growth
Artifact name: Districtwide staff meeting
Standard:
The teacher is a reflective practitioner who uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her
practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (students, families,
and other professionals in the learning community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of
each learner.
What the Standard means to me:
In order for an educator to grow it is their responsibility to get involved in as many experiences
that are going to help them in their career and then continuously reflect on these experiences
and how they made them a better educator.
Indicator:
9 (b) Engages in meaningful and appropriate professional learning experiences aligned with
his/her own needs and the needs of the learners, school, and system.
Description of the artifact:
This is a reflection on my thoughts and experience at a districtwide staff meeting on our math
program, Envisions. In this reflection, I talk about the program and the teacher's frustrations
with the program, how I received different ideas from other educators on ways to implement
the math, and how each school was at very different spots in the program even though we were
teaching the same material. I thought this experience was very eyeopening and a really
beneficial opportunity to get together with other teachers to learn new practices for
implementing the math program. This new program has been challenging to work through, so
it was nice to problem solve together in a larger group with many different ways of doing it.
Rationale:
This artifact shows that I was able to engage in a meaningful work period where I had the
opportunity to gain learning experiences that are going to support me as an educator and my
students as learners. By taking ideas from other teachers I am introducing new learning
techniques that my students may relate to. In my artifact I talk about listening to other
educators and math professionals to gain a deeper understanding of the program. Since the
program had just recently changed, my mentor and I were learning it together so it was very
helpful to have this experience and listen to others about how they were interpreting the new
changes and implementing them in their classroom. I believe this experience helped me grow
as an educator as well as helped me support my learners in a more effective way when
teaching math.
