Types of Motivation:
★ Intrinsic Motivation: when people engage in an activity for their own personal enjoyment, satisfaction, and stimulation
(Kovar, Combs, Campbell, Napper-Owen, & Worrell, 2012, p. 266 ).
★ Extrinsic Motivation: when people engage in an activity because they are forced and/or for a reward (Kovar et al., 2012, p.
266-267).
○ This type of motivation has shown that people are not motivated to perform the activity when the reward is not
offered, thus making them not perform the activity at all (Kovar et al., 2012, p. 267).
Challenges Regarding Motivation to be Physically Active:
★ Health issues ★ Boredom; not interested
★ Handicap ★ Too difficult
★ Parents/ Caregivers ★ Not enough space
★ Technology ★ Embarrassment; less confident about themselves
★ Anxiety/Shyness (Kovar et al., 2012, p. 263).
