ABSTRACT

STUDY ON IMPROVEMENT OF BEARING CAPACITY OF SOIL BY

GROUTING

The constructional activities in coastal areas often demand deep foundation because of
the poor engineering properties and the related problems arising from weak soil at shallow
depths. The very low bearing capacity of foundation bed causes shear failure and excessive
settlement. For increase of bearing capacity of soil grouting method is adopted.

Grouting technique is most pre-dominant way of injecting grout( for example cement
slurry). It is the one of the ways in which ground water can be controlled during civil engineering
works. Grouting is suitable where soil permeability would create a heavy demand on pumping or
ground conditions improvement may be economically inefficient.

Grout may also be used in the formation of pile foundations ground anchors under
pinning, in tunneling and road constructions. Different materials may be used for grouting
depending upon the soil or rock type the areas to be grouted.

However the basic process is the same soil or rock is injected with fluid grout which sets
and reduces permeability acting as a sealant.
