26010-2 Coolant, replace

See information under Coolant, replace before starting!

Warning

The coolant is toxic!

The filling apparatus needs for the refilling of the coolant liquid from
bottom of the engine. This is to reduce air pockets inside the engine.
Volvo doesn’t have the filling apparatus for delivery to workshops
anymore so you have to order it from any workshop supplier in your
area. The main function in the filling apparatus is the pump which
presses the coolant up in the engine.

If it’s necessary to manufacture local equipment you need Volvo tool

nr: 9012632 “Snap-On Nipple” to connect to the engine coolant
connection on the engine.

Coolant, draining

1
Remove the cover on the expansion tank.

Close the valves to the bus heating system.

Note: When draining coolant, changing an engine component or carrying out repairs that
requires the coolant to be drained, the taps to the bus heating system must always be closed.

3
Drain the coolant through the drain plug on the bottom edge of the engine or on the radiator.

Note: Use a coolant trolley.

Coolant, refilling

Fit 2 air vent hoses (preferably transparent), one on the bleeder nipple above the engine next
to the front edge of the cylinder head and one on the pipe between the thermostat housing and
the coolant radiator.

Note: The positioning of the hose is slightly different on centre and rear engines.

Remove the top cover on the expansion tank.

Fit the air vent hoses.

2
Connect the filler hose on the nipple underneath the engine, immediately in front of the
flywheel housing.

Open the 2 bleeder nipples above the engine.

Use the filling apparatus and fill coolant up to maximum level.

Wait for a few minutes (the level decreases) and fill up again to maximum level.

Close the filling apparatus.

Note: For this task, assistance is recommended. One person is required to handle the filling
apparatus and a second person to handle the engine.

Start the engine and let it run idle for at least 10 minutes.

Note: The bleeder nipples should be open.

Meanwhile, start the filling apparatus and make sure that you can see coolant in the expansion
tank.

Note: Do not overfill.

Then increase the engine speed as follows:

1000 rpm 2 min

1400 rpm 2 min
1600 rpm 2 min

Reduce the engine speed to idle running and leave it to run for a further 10 minutes.
Allow the coolant to drain from each air vent connection.

Then increase the engine speed as follows:

1000 rpm 2 min

1400 rpm 2 min
1600 rpm 2 min

Reduce the engine speed to idle running and close the bleeder nipples.

Stop the engine.

4
Remove the air vent hoses. Replace the expansion tank cover.

5
Open the taps to the bus heating system.

6
Remove the filling hose and pump. Close the bottom engine covers.

7
Restore the bus.

8
Test drive the bus until the engine reaches operating temperature and the thermostat opens.

9
If necessary, refill with coolant after the test drive. Make sure there are no leaks.
