Schools where adults tolerate more bullying may have

more severe bullying problems.

GSHS 2015 shows that unintentional injuries are major

cause of death and disability among young children.
Many unintentional injuries lead to permanent
disability and brain damage, depression, substance
abuse, suicide attempt, and the adoption of health risk
behaviors.

Academic Stress & Resilience Academic environments can be highly competitive, openaccesspub
and students must rely on their coping abilities to .org
handle school-related stress successfully.

High school students experience stress in many

situations. Researchers have found that the main
sources of stress in the academic environment are
exams, homework and work outside of school, giving
presentations, competition with classmates, and
academic overload and animal models. However, not
all sources of stress are academic as family problems,
anxiety about upcoming school terms, and difficulty
adapting to change and body image perception have
also been identified as important stressors.

In order to prevent negative outcomes associated with

academic stress, there is a need to measure students’
stress to help those in need improve their coping
strategies so they can manage stress and thereby
become academically resilient.

Student Discipline, Attitudes & Behaviors STUDENT DISCIPLINE Public School

Review
Many public school teachers also cite student attitudes, https://www.p
such as apathy and disrespect for teachers, as a major ublicschoolrevi
problem facing schools today. A poll from the National ew.com/blog/1
Center for Education Statistics cited that problems like 0-major-
apathy (lack of interest or enthusiasm), tardiness, challenges-
disrespect and absenteeism posed significant challenges facing-public-
for teachers. These issues were seen more frequently at schools
the secondary school level, rather than the primary
grades.

Furthermore, schools are the frontline service provider in

supporting the learning, wellbeing and safety of all
students. Collaboration between staff, students and
parents is fundamental to maintaining positive student
behavior and effective discipline in public schools.

STUDENT ATTITUDE & BEHAVIOR

In the education system of the Philippines, educators

have to address several concerns particularly in dealing
with school children. Almost everyday in class, students
with behavioral problems interrupt teacher’s discussion.

Defiant behavior of many students disrupts order,

obstruct the normal operation of classroom activities and
causes friction or misunderstanding among different
individuals or groups in the school. These behavior
problems of students deserve serious attention to
achieve best results in education.

Mental Health & Well-being of Teachers

Teachers, more often than not, are victimized by the
over-worked and underpaid policy of the system of the
past and present dispensations.

This leads to the emasculation and demoralization of

their ranks. This probably explains why the teaching
profession is not attracting the best and the brightest
from the crop of students anymore.

Furthermore, series of suicide cases involving teachers

and the alleged heavy workload as the cause of their
death. The public have expressed alarm over this
reported suicide cases and public officials plead
determination in the passage and approval of the

Teacher Protection Bill. The said Bill envisions to

enhance the situations of public school teachers at
work.

Other proposed measures spearheaded by Senator

Sonny Angara and other public officials includes the
following:

1. Senate Bill 135 which employs directs to

improve the quality of life of public school
teachers in the country.
2. SB 1870 or the Teacher Protection Act that
seeks to formulate policies and establish
support mechanisms for teachers in
matters of student discipline and classroom
management.

2.1. Under the proposed measure, the

DepEd must ensure that there are enough
guidance counsellors, who will serve as
support personnel to teachers in matters of
student discipline.

2.2 Moreover, the DepEd will be tasked to

provide teachers the appropriate pre-
service and in-service training on child
behavior and psychology, classroom
management techniques and
positive discipline.

Aside from the salary increase and protection of

teachers, other reforms Angara is pushing include:

1. Increasing the chalk allowance to P5,000

from P3,500 under SB 1871; and
2. Lowering the optional retirement age
from 60 years old to 55 years old under SB
1872.

Teachers are the backbone of high-

quality public education and strengthening the
teacher workforce can lay the foundation for fruitful
investments in other areas of public education. It is
imperative that every school must look into the well-
being of their teachers who are the frontline service
providers in the field of Education.
