II. Results, discussion and implications

Grade 12th english textbook: there 10 units providing the lexical items about 10 themes namely Life
stories, urbanization, The green movement, the mass media, cultural identity, endangered species,
artificial intelligence, the world of work, choosing a career, lifelong learning; and some typical
grammar including tenses, passive voice, conditional sentences, gerunds, reported speech, relatives
clause. Firstly, those content will be taken into consideration for the course.

In the very first place, in the questionnaires, all learners wish to enter high reputation universities,
and there are 75% of those in which english test play a very important role such as HaNoi university,
the university of language and international studies,…As a result, we have made a decision that the
entrance level for our future learners to join our course is at least B2 level according to CEFR.

The test includes 50 questions with 6 parts : phonetics, grammar and vocabulary, speaking situations,
reading comprehension, finding the mistakes, rewriting the sentences. The highest proportions of the
number of questions is in the part reading comprehension and grammar and vocabulary. These 2 part
will certainly be in our course.

Generally, the results we collected from the questionnaires and the entrance test are roughly the
same. In questionnaires, 81.25% learners confessed that reading comprehension is very challenging.
As we viewed from the test, many of them made mistakes in all 3 reading passages. Especially in the
last passage- the most difficult one, there must be at least 3 wrong answers out of 8.

Next, advanced grammar and vocabulary can also be a problem.

Besides, there is a large amount of ss made mistakes in rewriting sentences, simply because of the
complicated structures and advanced lexical resources. Therefore, advanced grammar and vocabulary
also need to be focused on.

Lastly, ss seem to have no problem dealing with phonetics, finding mistakes and conversational
situations. So we will not pay too much attention to those.
In general, almost 94% of learners have proved to be suitable for the course through the entrance
test. The range of marks is from 6.6 to 7.8 and most of incorrect answers refer to B2 or upper level.

There are some ss who can not reach our expected level, but we still decide to accept them into the
course.

To sum up, our group has come to an agreement that we will have the learners mainly practice
reading comprehension skill, grammar and vocabulary and writing. Additionally, they will be provided
a collection of tests which have the same format with the official one.
