Mobile Application for Creating
Subject Science

Mobile Application for Collaborating
6th Grade
The student will investigate and understand the
unique properties and characteristics of
water and its roles in the natural and
human-made environment. Key concepts
include
a) water as the universal solvent;
b) the properties of water in all three
phases;
c) the action of water in physical and
chemical weathering;
d) the ability of large bodies of water to
store thermal energy and moderate
climate;
e) the importance of water for
agriculture, power generation, and
public health; and
the importance of protecting and maintaining water
resources.

Complete the My students are using the Waltzing Atoms mobile

chemical reactions and see the chemical formulas
and chemical equations of different compounds.
Pedagogy Planning
Activity The students open the app and are first able to see
the periodic table listed by groups. I explain to
them that all things are made up of atoms. When
they click on basics we explore the bonding folder
and cover Ionic and covalent bonding and their
similarities and differences. The students are able
to click on the folders and see examples of ionic
and covalent bonds. They are shown chemical
equations and I explain to them that changes in the
chemical equation are the same as chemical
changes. The students are able to see animations of
chemical reactions and I explain to them that this is
because the atoms are made up of protons,
neutrons, and electrons. I then tell them that the
majority of living things on the planet are made up
of very few of these elements that they have seen.
The students are able to click on “The Human
Body” folder and see chemical reactions that take
place in the human body.
My students are using the Trello mobile application
on their individual cell phones or tablets to
collaborate with their peers and to collaboratively
brainstorm, research, and come up with a Trello
finished project describing the properties and uses
of water.
After a unit on water is taught (uses, states of
matter, weathering, energy, public health, and
large bodies of water having an effect on climate.)
the students will be placed into groups and put on
Trello. The complete project that the students
come up with will be unique to each individual
group. The cool thing about Trello is that I, as the
teacher, can see the steps that they take to get to
the final project. They begin by brainstorming what
their project should be. They then complete
research together on the individual topic assigned
(listed above). As each student comes up with a
new idea a card is added on Trello. I go in and
check the ideas to make sure the students are
coming up with feasible ideas and accurate
information. The students will then come up with a
rough draft of their project together. A final is then
posted online through Trello. All work is there for
me to check and I am able to see who contributed
what to the project by checking the individual
“cards” that the students have created.
