How Rhetoric Affects Me Daily

When I woke up this morning the first thing I did was grab my phone, I noticed that I had

several notifications from my many different media accounts -- but I didn't pay attention to any

of them besides Snapchat. I unlocked my phone with my thumbprint; the first thing that caught

my eye was my messages. I clicked on the little conversation bubble at the bottom of my screen

and clicked on the unread message from my grandma. She had hoped that I could give her a call

later and asked my how my roommate was. I didn't reply and went back to my unread messages

where I had two from a good friend, he tried to give me more advise on meeting people on

campus and in my classes. I replied and told him that “I’ll do better.” I closed my messages and

stared at my homepage. I took my thumb and dragged it from the top of my screen to the bottom

to look at more of my notifications. The next notification that caught my eye was from my At

Bat app where I keep myself updated on the Dodgers during baseball season. I haven't looked at

many articles or updates from them since its the off season, but this one caught my eye.

When I tapped on the notification it brought me inside the app and straight to just the

article that I wanted! Projected new lineups for the 2019 season. I scrolled down past the

American League to the National League and found the Dodgers. I didn't mind to read anything

but the title above the list of 1 through 8, it read, “Lineup if Season Started Today.” I skimmed
through the lineup and payed attention to my most valued players -- Seager, Bellinger, Muncy,

and Barnes. That was enough to satisfy me so I exited out of the app back to the homepage.

I went back into my notifications and read a quote from one of my favorite apps “Eternal

Sunshine.” They give me daily mantras and inspirational quotes to keep me motivated and

trusting in my decisions. I eventually went into twitter and noticed Fox 40 News tweeted about a

female police officer being killed, people having to opt into receiving emergency texts in certain

areas, and three people who were killed in a crash near my hometown. I scrolled down more and

found a video of one of my favorite bands, EarthGang retweeting their tweet about their album,

“Royalty” that came out about a year ago. After that I got ready and didn't pay attention to too

many notifications besides Snapchats from my friends.

My text messages are all persuading me to do more, like connecting with my grandma,

roommate and peers. They all take on a personal form and lead to connections with others. As is

my At Bat app, its leading me to connect with the baseball industry whenever I click on an

article or when I get notifications. I get notifications from many different teams, so it engages me

and keeps me updated on my team and competing teams. My Eternal Sunshine app is on a very

personal level, definitely pathos, how it appeals to my everyday emotions and convinces me to

feel better. Fox 40 News also relates to emotion. Feeling sadness, or remorse for people and the

bad things that happen. The headline of the crash near my hometown said a 1 year-old was

killed, but didn’t say how, or who else was affected. Trying to make me think and feel for the

child, or even interest me more in the tweet because of the child.
