Baker Engineering and Risk Consultants, Inc. (BakerRisk) performed a blast analysis of the
Tiger Rentals 8×40 portable office and developed structural upgrades to strengthen the building
against blast loading. The 8×40 portable office is a single story, single bay, steel framed
structure with corrugated steel side walls. BakerRisk has written a final report discussing the
analysis approach, assumptions, criteria, and results for blast upgrade design of the structure.1
This letter provides a brief overview of the results.
The blast evaluation of upgraded building components included finite element analysis and
single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) analysis. The design loading for the building upgrades was
based on a representative vapor cloud explosion (VCE) at a typical petrochemical plant. Such an
explosion can produce relatively long duration overpressures with a varying rise time to peak
pressure. The selected design blast load was conservatively assumed to have an instantaneous
rise to the specified peak free field pressure of 5.0 psi and a long duration (150 ms) relative to the
natural period of the components considered in the analysis. The actual structural blast
capacities of the strengthening measures exceeded the design blast load, and structural
connections were designed to ultimate capacities of the members.
Upgrades for the wall and roof panels were made by adding tube steel stiffeners along the panel
corrugations at regular intervals. Also, Tiger required penetrations through the side and end wall
panels for two doors, two windows, and two air handling units. Each of these modifications was
designed to resist the design blast loads. Structural drawings describing the blast-upgrades are
listed in Table 1. Structural response of all upgraded components remains at Low and Medium

Although the upgrades were designed for a specific load, Pressure-impulse (P-i) curves were
developed to summarize the capacity of the building under a range of blast loads and response
criteria. P-i curves describe a suite of blast loads that will result in the same permanent
deflections (and hence damage). The analysis showed that the capacity of the unit is controlled
by the capacity of the strengthened roof section. Therefore, P-i curves were generated based on
the response of the strengthened roof section. The following P-i curves (in terms of free-field
pressure and impulse) correspond to ASCE Low, Medium, and High levels of response. The
free-field pressure asymptotes are typically plotted in overpressure contour maps produced in
facility siting studies. The free-field pressure asymptotes (pressure levels for unlimited blast
duration capacity) for Low, Medium and High response are 4.6 psi, 6.3 psi, and 6.9 psi,
respectively. The following P-i curves also show limiting blast load durations for 6 psi and 8 psi
free-field pressures. The limiting blast load duration is calculated by multiplying the impulse
value by 2, and then dividing by the respective pressure level.

It should be noted that the capacity of the unit indicated by the P-i curve above is based only on
the structural capacity of the unit. The BakerRisk effort did not address other factors, including:
These issues and others specific to the site, in addition to the structural performance, should be
considered when selected a location for these buildings.
