This study aims at finding out the effect of the use of Extensive Reading
technique on students’ reading comprehension at the eight grade of SMP Negeri
24 Samarinda in academic year 2017/2018. The research design of this study was
experimental design using quantitative approach. The population of this study was
the eight grade students of SMP N 24 Samarinda consisiting of 60 students which
were randomly taken as sample and conducted in two groups, i.e. experimental
and control group. The reading comprehension test was used as an instrument to
collect the data. In analyzing data, t-test was used to find out whether there was a
significant effect between the results of experimental groups’ post-test and control
groups’ post-test.

The results of this study show that the use of Extensive Reading is
effective to improve the students’ reading comprehension. It is supported by the
qualitative data which show that (1) Extensive Reading technique helps the
students to provide the sufficient background knowledge that can facilitate
comprehension; (2) Extensive Reading technique can help the students improving
their vocabulary mastery; (3) Extensive Reading technique provides the students
interesting materials that can attract the students’ reading interest and can give
positive attitudes toward reading; (4) The Extensive Reading activities such as
implementing book flood, implementing sustained silent reading, implementing
quick book report, and presenting the materials successfully improve the students’
reading comprehension. Moreover, this technique can attract the students’ reading
interest and build positive attitude toward reading

The findings of this study revealed that the mean score of the experimental
group post-test was 76.13 which was higher than the mean score of control group
post-test (69.3). In addition, the findings of t-test revealed the 𝑡𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 was higher
than 𝑡𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 (4.40 ≥ 2.00) and the 𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 was higher than the 𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑙𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙 (0.000 <
0.05) which meant that there was significant difference of the mean score between
experimental groups’ post-test and control groups’ post-test. This finding was
supported with the large effect size which was 1.136.
