Provisional Cast On (Crochet Chain method)

Using a crochet hook several sizes too big for the yarn, make a
slipknot and chain for 1”. Hold knitting needle in left hand. With
yarn in back of the needle, work next chain st by pulling the yarn
over the needle and through the chain st. Move yarn back to
behind needle, and repeat for the number of sts required. Chain a
few more sts off the needle, then break yarn and pull end through
last chain. CO sts will be incorrectly mounted; knit into the back
of these sts. To unravel (when sts need to be picked up), pull
chain end out, and the chain should unravel, leaving live sts.

DIRECTIONS
Bag Base
With scrap yarn, provisionally CO 41 sts. With MC, purl 1 row, then
work in Woven Stitch flat until base is 8" long, ending after row 2.

Next rnd (RS): With MC, *K2tog, K1, K2tog; repeat from * to last
st, K1: 25 sts. Do not turn work. Pick up and knit 23 sts down
the left side of the square. Unravel the provisional CO and place
41 cast-on sts on a spare needle; *K2tog, K1, K2tog from spare
needle; repeat from * to last st, K1. Pick up and knit 23 sts up right
side of square.

There should now be 96 total stitches on the needles. PM and

begin working in the rnd. Cut MC.

With C1, work rnd 1 of Chevron Lace Chart; rep these 8 sts 12
times around. Work rnd 2 of the pattern in C2, round 3 in C3.

Continue in this manner, working each rnd in a different color in

this order. Carry unused colors up the side, twisting them in with
the working yarn every few rows.

Work for 12” in Chevron Lace pattern, ending having worked

round 5.
