Subject History

Grade Level 3rd

Learning Objective 3.3 The student will explain how the contributions of
ancient Greece and Rome have influenced the present world in
terms of architecture, government (direct and representative
democracy), and sports.
Content

(I will be focusing on architecture for the simulation that is

chosen).
Online Activity Prior to beginning this lesson, the teacher will provide the
students with a screen cast of a power point slide explaining
the important details of the contributions of ancient Greece
and Rome in the present world in the terms of architecture,
government, and sports. The power point will allow students
to view it online on their own and listen as the teacher
explains each slide.

Next, the teacher will have the students turn on their

microphones to have an online discussion about the power
point slides and review various questions that the students
may have about the material. The teacher will allow students
to engage with one another in the chat area and set them up in
different online rooms so that they can answers the questions
together. The online room will contain groups of three and
each will take turns typing what they believe is the answer to
the various questions that the teacher shared with them
during discussion. Some example questions may include: 1.
What different architect styles did Greece or Rome introduce
to the present world? 2. What sports did Greece or Rome
introduce? 3. What type of Government did Greece or Rome
contain?

Once the power point has been viewed by all the students and
the questions were reviewed in the chat rooms, the teacher
will describe the activities/simulations that the students will
use in order to further engage in the contributions of ancient
Rome and Greece. The first simulation online is called Roman
Villa where students will be able to view and reconstruct the
Pedagogy

village. Students will be able to note any architect and

materials that are used in the present time. The teacher will
begin this online lesson by having students review the
different types of architecture in Rome and compare it to the
architecture of homes, building, churches, etc that exist during
the present time. Students will jot down on a piece of paper
the similarities that they notice. As the students begin the
simulation, they will be able to build and reconstruct a Roman
Villa and note any materials and architecture that was used.
Students can save their work as they move through the
simulation.

In order for the teacher to assess the students’ comprehension

of the simulation, he/she will hold an online discussion via
webcam to discuss the Roman architecture. Students will be
able to type their answers in the chat room OR they may voice
their answers by using their microphones.
