PATTERN

a quick PowerPoint by Karen Nazario

Pattern
pattern is a combination of elements or
shapes repeated in a recurring and
regular arrangement to create a visual
beat
Patterns in Nature
Nature often follows the pattern of fractals. Fractals resemble
“discernable regularity“, but they include the possibility off-
scaling, mirroring and rotating elements, which makes the
pattern much more complex and harder to comprehend than
the simple geometric arrangements designed by humans.

Symbolic uses of pattern
pattern is often used symbolically to represent
many things: people, beliefs, the natural
world, history, tradition.

The predictability of pattern is important in

establishing a historical tradition and cultural
practice.

Colors and shapes have specific meanings, and

are passed down from generation to
generation.

Pattern as decoration
We are all familiar with the use of pattern as decoration, from clothing, to everyday objects, to
home decorating . Above is an example of an elaborate use of pattern in a café.

Now, I would like all of you to walk out
and find some patterns of your own.

Return to class after 5 minutes so I may

give you your project assignment.
KOINOBORI
In Japan, the arrival of May is indicated by
the appearance of flying fish: carp-shaped
windsocks known as “Koinobori” are flown
in honor on Tango no Sekku on May 5th.
Block printing, specifically wood block, also has deep roots in Japanese art.
In this project…

students will design a “scale”- shaped block from

linoleum printing material.

The scale is to be applied repetitively to outdoor-safe

fabric which has been cut in the shape of a fish to create
a pattern.

Add details like eyes, fins, and a tail using metallic and
sparkle paint, and the Koinobori is ready to hang and
“swim” through the breeze!
