Atheros Client Utility Manual

Atheros Wireless Client Utility Manual.

The Atheros Client Utility is used for all RM product that has the Askey Atheros
Wireless Mini-PCI cards installed. The application is not preinstalled but the
installation files can be found in C:\RM\Drivers\Net

The Windows Zero Configuration setup can be used to configure WEP encryption for
the Askey Atheros Wireless Mini PCI cards. For other forms of encryption the
Profile Manager may have to be used (such as WPA encryption which cannot be
configured through the Windows Zero Configuration properties for this device). To
disable the Windows Zero Configuration and allow the Client software to be used
instead, un-tick the “Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings”.

The Atheros Profile Manager can be opened by right clicking on the Wireless Icon in
the bottom right task bar and opening the Wireless properties.
The Help option can further help the user understand the operation of the different
settings in the client utility. When the client software is installed this manual is stored
in the C:\program files\Atheros\manual directory as a set of HTML files. This manual
is also accessible from the Utility icon in the desktop task bar.

Select the Profile Management tab to configure the Atheros wireless client.
The existing profile can be modified by selecting the profile name followed by
modify, or a new one added. The available networks can also be viewed. The list
shows the SSID names (if they are broadcasted), the signal strength, the channel
number used and the wireless mode. The user can associate to a network by selecting
is and selecting “Activate”.

The Profile can then be edited for security settings.

The Profile Manager first window will show the SSID of the access point if it has
been set up to transmit it for the B/G band. After entering a Profile name with the
SSID information, select the Security tab.

.
The required encryption method can be selected here and if a key is required for the
selected method this can be entered by selecting the Configure button and entering the
user defined key which must match that set on the access point (WPA-PSK key entry
shown in the following picture).
Under the Advanced tab other wireless options can be configured. The wireless mode
can be used to allow or disallow connection rates depending on the network and the
user requirements. The 5GHz 108Mbps option will require pairing of channels. The
access point must be set up to allow this.

The Network type can be changed from Access point (Infrastructure) to Ad Hoc (Peer
to Peer). The Preamble setting can help with compatibility problems with 802.11b
access points. If there is a connection problem setting this to Long Only can help
resolve this.

There are also two power management options which can be used as the user requires.
Closing the Profile Management window and going back to the Client Utility window
the Diagnostic tab can be selected. It will show the following.
