Write the simple definition of composite and indicate the three criteria which are supposed to be satisfied before a material called a composite. 2. Explain difference between fibers and whiskers. 3. Define micro mechanics and macro mechanics. 4. For a composite E,=100 Gpa, E,, = 10 Gpa. Calculate the percentage increase in load carrying capacity of a uniaxial bar when the fibre increased from 70% to 80%. 5. What are the main factors that are peculiar to laminate strength analysis? 6. List the assumption made in classical laminated theory. 7. List down the advantages of sandwich construction. 8. Why is low modulus of honey comb used in the middle of the sandwich beam? 9. What are prepergs? 10. Write a short note on “Braiding Process”. 1 12, 13. 4 @ ) fa) (b) (a) () @ (b) PART B — (5 x 16 = 80 marks) Define stiffness and compliance matrix for an anisotropic materials and explain how it is transformed to orthotropic, monoclinic and isotropic materials. Or How are composites classified? Briefly explain each type of composites with their merits and demerits. A composite has continuous aligned glass fibers with a tonsile modulus of 76 GPa and strength of 1500 MPa in a matrix of polyester with a tensile modulus of 3GPa and strength of 50 MPa. Determine the tensile modulus and strength of the composite when the load is applied in a direction parallel to the fibers and the volume fraction is 60%. Or Derive the expression for stiffness matrix and compliance matrix for an angle ply lamina using generalized Hooke’s law. Find the stiffness matrices [4] and (B] for 3 ply (0/30/60) Graphite epoxy lamina using classical lamination theory. Assume E,=175Gpa, Ey, =23GPa, v4. =0.28, Gy =12 GPa and each ply having thickness of 5mm. Or Obtain the governing differential equation for unidirectional anisotropic plate and transform the equation for orthotropie plate and isotropic plate. Discuss the detail design concepts for construction of sandwich beam. Or Deseribe the failure modes of sandwich panels under the following loading conditions. @) Shear (i) Buckling.
