For Man Who
Shot Kingdon

T he justice system can,
at times, be hard to
understand with many
getting off with just a slap
on the wrist. However,
earlier this week, justice
was served for the at-
tempted murder of RCMP
Corporal, Graeme King-
don.
On Tuesday, at the
Minnedosa Court House,
Judge John Combs sen-
tenced 19-year-old
Therae Racette-Beaulieu,
from Sandy Bay First Na-
tion, with a total 18-year
prison term for his cruel
and careless actions in
August 2018 in which Cpl.
Kingdon was injured by
gunshot near Onanole.
The sentence in-
cludes 15 years for at-
tempted murder and
one-year-and-a-half for
charges related to break
and enter, robbery and
stolen firearms. The time
he has already served
in custody since being
arrested in August was
factored into the total
sentence, leaving Racette-
Beaulieu with just over
17 years in prison left to
serve.

O n the evening of Tues-
day, April 16th mem-
bers of the Minnedosa Fire
Department headed out to
the village of Bethany to do
a special, live training ex-
ercise.
A delapidated two-
and-a-half storey brick
home, donated to the de-
partment by Rob Boyd, al-
lowed the firefighters to fill
the interior with smoke to
replicate an actual burn-
ing building. As the old
house was still structurally
sound, it provided a great
opportunity for firefighters
to do some training in an
actual building with multi-
ple rooms and floors. Usu-
ally, the fire department
uses the sea-can container
at its ground training site
in the Industrial Park.
“Using an actual house
is a lot better training op-
portunity for the crew as
you can go into each room
and utilize the second
floor,” explained Fire Chief
Dean Jordan. “All mem-
bers go through their level
one training at the college
and have the opportunity
to use their burn house for
training, but to be able to
do additional trainings is
always a bonus.”

The houses will be burned
separately, allowing the
department to have a cou-
ple of good training oppor-
tunities.
During Tuesday
night’s excersice, skills
such as breaking out win-
dows to enter a smoke-
filled home and entering
to locate and rescue oc-
cupants (a life-size stuffed
dummy) were carried out
as part of this valuable
training practice.
In other recent fire
department happenings,
this past winter, they se-
cured the purchase of a
1996 Freightliner FL-80
pumper truck that holds
3,000 gallons of water. This
purchase was recently fi-
nalized by Town Council at
a cost of $81,360.
The bonus of this truck
is that it is also set up as
a pumper. This gives the
department three pump-
ers and a tanker within its
fleet. “The advantage of
this truck is the ability to
have the dual purpose, a
tanker and pump truck in
one. The tanker will go to
all rural fires along with
the fire truck,” said Dean.
Previously, when in
need of additional water
on scene of a fire, the de-
partment was using the
Town of Minnedosa water
truck that only held 800-
1,000 gallons of water.
