Allicia Hilton Teaching Philosophy
I strongly believe that the classroom should feel like a community. The students need to
feel like it is our classroom and not just my classroom. I want each person that walks into our
classroom: learner, parent, educator, administrator, to feel like they have a sense of belonging.
Encouraging students to feel like they are apart of a community will help them contribute to a
much larger community as they move toward their futures and take charge of changing the
world.
Although the classroom will be a community, I recognize that education should focus on
each learner being their own individual and being taught in a way that honors who they are. As
an educator, I will focus on continuous learner growth. I want each learner in the classroom to
reach their full potential. In our rapidly changing world, this must include consideration for how
technology can be leveraged to transform instruction while developing foundational skills and
strategies. I will use technology for both teaching and learning. In order to facilitate growth, I
will focus on multiple means of assessment in order to inform me of the differentiation strategies
I will need to put in place. My assessment strategies and differentiation strategies will be
research and data informed, but will also be studentcentered. I believe feedback is an important
part of continuous learner growth. Datainformed assessment is what drives my learning, but
meaningful feedback is what is going to drive their learning. I believe with meaningful feedback
a learner can truly strive in a classroom setting. I want to show the learners in the classroom that
I care about their work to inspire them to be successful in their endeavors. Meaningful feedback
is essential for the learner and for me as the teacher as the process informs my instruction.
I strongly believe that it is important to see the learner as a whole person, who exists
outside of the classroom. Therefore, I will communicate and collaborate with parents. I want
parents to be involved in the classroom as much as possible. It is important for learners to see
that everyone is working together to ensure they succeed in the best possible way. I want the
learners in my classroom, and their parents to see that I care about them.
I recognize that there is not one right way to exhibit management strategies in the
classroom. If learners are empowered, taking ownership of their learning and their behavior, they
will be more likely to succeed in the classroom. If a learner feels respected and safe then they
will be more likely to reach their potential. If a learner needs some extra help or motivation in
feeling safe and respected, I feel fully equipped to help with their emotional needs. I believe as
long as students feel welcomed, respected, empowered, and safe in a learning community, then
management becomes secondary. In our classroom, we will focus on responsibility.
Responsibility for the work we complete, and for our classroom learning community. Having the
learners be responsible for their work and the classroom allows them to feel a sense of ownership
for the environment they are continuously growing in. We will also show respect for each
individual by developing compassion and empathy.
