CAVITE DE BORACAY

HISTORY OF CAVITE DE BORACAY

Boracay de Cavite is a small cove located inside Gregorio Lim Marine

Base in Calumpang, Sapang 1, Ternate, Cavite. Officially named

KATUNGKULAN BEACH RESORT, it is one of the nicest beaches

near manila featuring a beach that has gray-ish sand (not white,

though in photos it would look like white to off-white) that is so fine and

soft to the feet. One of the most striking features of Boracay de Cavite

is the towering stone wall on one side of the cove perfect for your

“selfie” and “cam-whoring” moments. The water is not turquoise blue,

but its clean. Corregidor Island and the Mariveles mountain range in

Bataan are also visible from the cove. Resort once dubbed as the

“Little Boracay on Cavite” and Protected by the Philippine Marinbes

Corps. The name is obviously a derivative of call of duty in english

which means “katungkulan“ intagalog or pilipino dialect. And the Sari-

sari store owned by the marines is available near beach entrance

which sells snacks, softdrinks, basic toiletry needs and some marines

stuff.

Once used exclusively as a training ground for the Marines, they now

decided to open this to the public and it is now one of the most visited

beach resorts.
Ternate ( chabacano : Municipalidad de Ternate ) is a fourth-class

municipality in the province of cavite, it has a population of 23, 157

people.

The Merdicas( also spelled Mardicas or Mardikas ) were catholic

natives of the islands of Ternate and Tidore of the Moluccas, converted

during the Portuguese occupation of the islands by Jesuit missionaries.

The islands were later captured by the Spanish who vied for their

control with the Dutch. In 1663, the Spanish garrison in Ternate were

forced to pull out to defend Manila against an impending invasion by

the Chinese pirate koxinga( sacrificing the Moluccas to the Dutch in

doing so ). A number of Merdicas volunteered to help, eventually being

resettled in a sandbar near the mouth of the Maragondon river ( known

as the Bahra de Maragondon ) and Tanza, Cavite.

The invasion did not occur as koxinga fell ill and died. The Merdicas

community eventually integrated into the local population. Today, the

place is called Ternate after the island of Ternate in the Moluccas, and

the descendants of the Merdicas continues to use their Spanish creole

(with Portuguese and Papuan influence ) which came to be known as

TernatenoChabacano.

Private vehicle to reach the place. To get there, you need to take the

CAVITEX Express way from Coastal road, driving all the way to the

towns of Rosario, Naic, TanzaMaragondon and finally ternate from the

main town you will drive some 30 mins more through Mt. Palay-palay
National Park, the marine base main gate is located along the road

between Puerto Azul and Caylabne Bay resorts. The coast is about a

2-kilometer drive from the main gate.

Public Transportation, take a bus ride going to Ternate Saulog Bus in

Coastall Mall along NAIA Road. Then ride a tricycle with fare around

P75 per head, maximum of 3 passengers and tell the driver to drop

you to the resort. Since there’s no public transportation here, better ask

the driver to fetch you back to the terminal with fare of P100/head.

Events and Festival

Ternate was originally a sandbar formed at the mouth of the

Maragondon River and popularly called Barra de Maragondon. It was

swampy and densely covered with mangroves, providing a resting

place for natives of Maragondon going out to Manila Bay to fish. In

the year 1700, seven Merdica Families consisting of about 200

persons were transferred to the Barra de Maragondon from the old

Bagumbayan( nowErmita ), Manila, to establish their residence there.

The Merdicas or Mardicas. Meaning “men of the sea" or "free

people" were transferred to Maragondon by the Spanish Authorities

because of their frequent brawls with the Tagalogs of Ermita. Noted

for their bravery. The Merdicas were Malays from Ternate in the

Moluccas Archipelago, who volunteered to come to Manila along with

the Spanish garrison that was pulled out of the Island by Spanish

Governor General Manrique de Lara in 1662 to reinforce the

defenses of Manila in preparation for a threatened invasion by the

Chinese pirate-patriot Koxinga, after he had conquered Formosa

from the Dutch. To forestall the repetition of the disastrous

Limahonginvasion of 1574, the Spanish governor-general ordered

the withdrawal of Spanish forces from Zamboanga and the Moluccas

and concentrated them in Manila, ready to repel the Koxinga attack.

Fortunately for the city residents, the Chinese warlord fell ill and died

before he could make a good. Under an agreement with the Spanish

governor general the Merdicas were required to provide protection

against attacks by Moro pirates, and in return for their services they

were taken to the Barra de Maragondon because of frequent Moro

raids in that area. The Merdicas chose as a site of their new homes a

place near the mouth of the Maragondon River, calling it Gala-la,

derived from the name of a tree grew there. They set up a

watchtower on top of a hill which they called Mira.Aside from fishing;

the Merdicas cleared the land and tilled the soil. They eventually

intermarried with the natives of neighboring villages, building up a

community that grew up rapidly and expanded. The most prominent

families of the community bore surnames Pereira, Estuebar, De leon,

Ramos, De la Cruz, Nigoza, and Ninofranco. In 1850 the burgeoning

Merdica population were able to build from their own funds a stone

church, a casa real (tribunal or municipal building), and a school

house Under the leadership of Florencio Ninofranco, the community

became a regular pueblo or town, and they named it Ternate in

memory of their ancestral birthplace in the Mollucas. Pablo de Leon,

a wealthy Merdica leader, became the first gobernadorcillo of

Ternate. Another source says that Ternate was separated from

Maragondon and became an independent municipality in 1863.The

Ternatenos speak a kind of chabacano (a sort of indigenized

Spanish) which they inherited from their forefathers. They still use it

as a principal means of communication among themselves.

However, in writing to their relatives and friends or in conversing with

strangers from other towns, they use Tagalog.Due to the rapid

increase in population, a time came when the natural and other

resources of the town became inadequate for its needs. In 1856 the

alkalde mayor (equivalent to provincial governor) of Cavite ordered

the fixing of the boundary between Ternate and Maragondon, giving

the former sufficient land for its inhabitants. Ternate was authorized

to take under its jurisdiction the barrio of Patungan. However for

some unknown reason, barrio Patungan is still under the jurisdiction

of Maragondon. Ternate has three barangays in the Poblacion and

four barrios. These are barangays 1, 2, and 3, and barrios are San

Jose, San Juan, Zapang and Bucana. The Philippine Revolution

against Spain (1896-1898) and the subsequent Philippine-American

War (1899-1901) had so depleted the population of Cavite Province

that the Philippine Commission on October 15, 1903 approved Public

Act No. 947 reducing the municipalities of Cavite to nine. Ternate

was absorbed by Naik, this situation remaining until 1916 when the

Philippine Senate restored Ternate to its former status as an

independent municipality.A most unfortunate happening took place in

Ternate in early 1945 when, due to American incendiary bombing

and bombardments from naval units, the town was almost wiped out

from the map. Only seven out of approximately one thousand houses

miraculously survived the man-made holocaust. But the Ternatenos,

people of sterner stuff, went on to start life anew, building from the

ruins and ashes of war, tilling their lands, doing their daily chore of

fishing in the sea, uncomplaining, looking forward to the dawn of a

new day in their live.

NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

BoracayDe Cavite beach resort at different levels of fun and beauty but

what is it really that amazes some who've been to this marine base powdery

white sand beach resort in Cavite?

So as not to confuse you if you happen to search for information about this

resort once dubbed as the "Little Boracay in Cavite", allow me to introduce you to

its new name - Katungkulan Beach Resort. Protected by the Philippine Marines

Corps, the name is obviously a derivative of call of duty in English which means

"Katungkulan" in Tagalog or Pilipino dialect.

Cavite de Boracay is definite a must avoid place during summer

weekends and holyweek holidays making it hard to find a cottage to settle

swimming things, food and beach bumming stuff. Secure everything especially
valuables as cottages were open and prone to all sorts and types of Pinoy looting

sessions

Fishing and bonfire building is prohibited for those who opt in for overnight

swimming at double the rates / fees of entrance. You can pitch a tent if you like

and can rent small rooms for more security and comfort of call of nature facility.

You can bring your own food or grill within the beach shore if you have your own

grilling stove or "ihawan”

SWOT ANALYSIS

Strength within the destination

Ternate beach is easy to visit and has a few hours travel time from Manila.A

beach that looks like an island near the Metro and no near houses.Ternate beach

is just in front of Bataan. It is a good place for seeking adventures, activities,

sports, camping experience and events. The destination can be considered as a

place for jogging and exercise because of its mountainous areas. The destination

is big and wide, three resorts are built. In the accommodation, Ternate Beach

Resort, people are friendly and hospitable. In Ternate Beach Resort, they have

many choices in the types of accommodation that guest will prefer like tents,

non/air-conditioned rooms, standard rooms, nipa huts both for overnight and day

stay.

Weaknesses within the destination

The destination is far from the city. There is no restaurant in the destination itself,

there are garbage’s along the shore and the air-conditioned room for the

accommodation is not enough and the ventilation is not good. There are no lights

outside the resort so it was very dark and the roads are not cemented well and

there are parts where not cemented.

Opportunities within the destination

Since the resort has only 3 activities that they offered why not add some thrilling

activities like ATV within the Ternate. They can also add some water sport

activity like wake board, wind surfing and jet ski. They can also put some night

activity in the resort like acoustic band and karaoke to make more the resort

lively in the night. Put some beach activity like beach volley ball and born fire

Build a commercial building like spas, restaurant, souvenir shops so that the

guest don’t have to travel back and forth from the resort. Offered some youth

camp activities, retreat and camping site.

Threats within the destination

Overcrowding- May disturb the Marine Trainees Development- May cause

destruction to natural resources competition
