AC INTERFERENCE SURVEY

There is a possibility of induced AC voltages in pipeline below HT line crossings . If the pipeline at
such locations are not grounded effectively for AC voltages there is a safety hazard.

It is desirable to know the AC voltage levels of pipeline with variation in load factor as well as
switching transients.

For this purpose a recording of the AC pick up volts using a Data Logger for 12 hours will give an
idea of the peak AC voltage pick up during the day.

The AC volts between pipeline and a ground at TLP below HT line shall be recorded for 12 hours
at frequency of 1 sec. In case a ground is not available, a portable Copper sulfate reference
electrode shall be used as ground.

The pipeline below HT line crossings are generally provided with zinc grounding anodes through
polarization cells for grounding AC voltages and blocking DC voltages.

The anode to earth resistance of anodes shall be checked with Earth Tester and the effectiveness
of polarization cell checked by measuring the AC and DC PSP readings with polarization cell in
circuit and again when bypassed.

A CIPL survey to record AC potentials at 1m gaps for total length of 1Km around HT line crossing
shall be done to record the extent of influence of HT line on pipeline
