Title: The human digestive system
1. What is digestive system?
The digestive system is a group of organs working together to convert food into energy
and basic nutrients to feed the entire body. Food passes through a long tube inside the
body known as the alimentary canal or the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract).
2. What are the organs that comprise the human digestive system?
- The alimentary canal is made up of the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small
intestines, and large intestines. In addition to the alimentary canal, there are several
Analysis
important accessory organs that help your body to digest food but do not have food
pass through them. Accessory organs of the digestive system include the teeth, tongue,
salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas
3. What are the different processes that are involved in the digestion process?
- To achieve the goal of providing energy and nutrients to the body, six major functions
take place in the digestive system: Ingestion, Secretion, Mixing and movement,
Digestion, Absorption and Excretion.
The human digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract plus the accessory organs of
Abstraction digestion (the tongue, salivary glands, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder).[1] In this system, the
process of digestion has many stages, the first of which starts in the mouth. Digestion involves
the breakdown of food into smaller and smaller components, until they can be absorbed and
assimilated into the body.
The different organs of the digestive system includes:
Mouth- food that enters the mouth is lubricated and chewed until it forms to a bolus.
Pharynx- common passage ways for digestion and respiration.
Esophagus- is a muscular tube through which food passes from the pharynx to the
stomach.
Stomach- is the expanded organ located between the esophagus and the small intestine.
Small Intestine- is considered as the organ of complete digestion and absorption.
Large Intestine- temporary stores fecal materials, absorbs vitamins produced by certain
symbiotic bacteria in the colon, and reabsorbs water from the indigested residue
Rectum- found at the distal end of the sigmoid colon that serve as a warehouse for the
undigested residue or feces.
Anus- exit point of fecal materials
Accessory Organs for Digestion:
Salivary Glands
Liver and gall bladder- produce bile that emulsifies fats and neutralization of the chyme
Pancreas- secretes pancreatic juices that aids in the digestion of proteins
Application What is the function of appendix in our digestive system?
Give the functions of the following parts of the digestive system.
1. Stomach-
2. Small intestine-
Assessment 3. Large intestine-
4. Gall bladder
5. Pancreas
