3. Determine the principle stress, the maximum in plane shear stress and average normal stress at the
point (refer Figure 2). Specify the orientation of the element in each case. Sketch the result on each
element. By assuming the material is steel alloy A 36 with σY = 250 MPa, determine if failure (yielding)
has occur on the basis of the maximum distortion energy theory. (15 marks)
