LESSON PLAN ELEMENTS REQUIRED:

 Students will understand the elements of narrative writing.

 Students will create a unique narrative writing using their imagination.
Objective
 Students will include an exciting introduction, dialogue with a sequence of events,
transition and concrete words to capture the experience, and proper grammar.

The teacher will start by asking students, “what is narrative writing?” Students will portray
their understanding of what narrative writing is based upon their prior knowledge. The
teacher will make sure students understanding that narrative writing is either based on real
Anticipatory Set experiences or an imaginary story that follows a sequence of events from beginning to end.
Next the teacher will ask students “what kind of story’s have you read that are narrative
writing?” Students will answer with varying stories but the teacher will make sure students
understand that narratives are fiction that may be based on a real life experience with
dialogue to help readers understand the story or complete fiction with unrealistic ideas.
While pulling from students prior knowledge the teacher will assess students knowledge
about narrative writing to determine how in-depth to go in the lesson.

The teacher will then proceed to show students “Six Traits of Narrative Writing” by Beverly
Scott a video on YouTube as an introduction. This video explains the elements that must be
included in narrative writing.

After the video the teacher will hand out the worksheet the “Narrative Writing Checklist” to
all students. The teacher will explain to the students that they will be filling in the examples
to each checklist item before putting it in their binder to use for all future narrative writing
to make sure they include all the elements in their writing. First the teacher will start by
discussing what setting, character description, plots, and conflict is and why they must
include them in their writing while giving an example for each. Second the teacher will
explain what an example of an exciting beginning is to a story and asking students “why
does this need to be included in your story?” Thirdly the teacher will ask, “what is

dialogue?” and then discuss how it must be included in a story to develop the characters
Model
experiences and events in the story while writing an example. Forth the teacher will explain
that all details must flow in a sequence with a beginning, middle, and end while writing an
example of an event that must be said in order to make sense. Fifth the teacher will ask
students, “what is a topic sentence?” Students will respond and include that it introduces
what’s in the paragraph and helps the story flow with understand while writing an example
For the sixth checklist item the teacher will explain what transition words are and write
examples of them while explaining why you use them in your writing. Seventh the teacher
will discuss what concrete words and phrases are while explaining how they can be used to
capture the experience. The teacher will then fill in the example on the checklist. The eighth
element of the narrative writing checklist is providing a conclusion to finalize the story and
wrap up the entire story. I will provide an example like they find the missing shoe or eat the
cake they just baked. Ninth and lastly I will explain the proper grammar elements of writing
like that it must include capitalization, punctuation, and spelling while writing how to do so
on the example on the checklist.

The teacher will then explain to students that today they will be writing about the
adventures of Alvin (our class hamster) when he went missing. The teacher will give them
the prompt that “one day the forth grade students of Yolanda Elementary school walked into
class to find that Alvin was no where to be found…” Based upon this prompt the teacher
Guided Practice will explain to students that they must use the nine checklist items to help them create a
narrative explanation of Alvin adventures.

Next the teacher will excuse students by quiet rows to get their computer and open up to
Google Classroom. Once all students have a computer the teacher will show students where
on Google Classroom they will be typing their narrative writing.
Students will work independently on creating their own narrative writing based upon the
Independent Practice prompt given while using their imagination. When students believe they are complete with
their writing the teacher will have students reread their writing while checking off each item
on the “Narrative Writing Checklist” to make sure they included it in their writing.

Closure After students have been given time to begin their narrative writing, the teacher will ask
students to share one element they included in Alvin’s adventure with the class.

Evaluation Each student’s narrative writing will be assessed based upon if they included all the
*Assessment/Rubrics elements the checklist asked for.
