HDF 190: FLITE (FIRST-YEAR LEADERS INSPIRED TO EXCELLENCE)

URI MINOR IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES, CENTER FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

CORE REQUIREMENT FOR THE LEADERSHIP MINOR

LEARNING CONTRACT

Goal: To identify and utilize my Strengths in an organizational/interpersonal setting that

aligns with the mission, vision, values and sponsored programs and activities of URI’s
Center for Student Leadership Development.

Activity: (Detail your plan here)

For my learning contract, I have applied for the DRIVE overnight multicultural
program. The DRIVE overnight multicultural program will allow me to use my VIA
character strengths of harmony, connectedness, realtor, includer, and activator. My value
of connectedness especially to actually get to know my incoming student and talk with
them on a personal level what URI is all about. Making a great bond with a first year out
of state student can not only help them feel better about being far away from home but
also know that they have someone to go to if they ever have questions about URI. My
Gallup strengths of perspective, honesty, judgement, appreciation of beauty and
excellence, and prudence. Perspective especially can allow me to hear out any concerns
that the incoming student might have, but also, I will be giving out my perspective about
URI to my student and how many different aspects that URI has to offer.

Evidence: MOP Host picture from training.

Annotation: The DRIVE multicultural overnight program is a program for students who
have been accepted to the University of Rhode Island who identify as multicultural and
stay the night with a student host to see the University at a first-hand experience before
committing to any school. This overnight program took over two different weekends with
different student hosts coming each different weekend. Students at the University of
Rhode Island had the option to be a day or night host. I chose to be a night host to have a
better experience and also get to know my host on a personal level. I was given a training
prior to the weekends to be prepared for all of the activities we were going to do with the
incoming students. Throughout this experience my strengths of includer were present at
the time of my student’s arrival. I made sure she was included and felt comfortable in
every activity DRIVE had organized for the students. I was also able to use my value of
connectedness and spark up natural conversation with my host. She was comfortable at
asking me any questions which made it seem more natural and an easier experience for
her to see the University of Rhode Island. My strengths of honesty were always being
used, every question my host asked I always responded honestly and with an open
mindset. I also made sure my prudence was in check because I wanted to make sure I was
not giving too much of a bias answer for difficult questions. I enjoyed this experience a
lot, I look forward to host other students in the years to come and build more lasting
relationships with incoming students considering URI as an option.
