Mattie Anderson

A Letter to Myself

Mattie, high school sucks. I hate to be the one to tell you, but your anxiety doesn’t go

away when you leave. I know you’re scared to talk about it but there are people around you who

love you and want to help you the very best they can. Trust them. Also know that you’re going to

make the best friends you’ll probably ever have in college, so don’t get so caught up in how your

“friends” now feel about you. Mattie, I also promise you with all of my heart that he isn’t good

to you and you should listen to your mom and dad when they try to tell you that. It hurts and its

hard, four years is a long time. I know how scary it is to picture your life without him, but

promise me you will try. You became so happy once you started doing things for yourself. You

found people who love you for you.

You still struggle I can promise you that, but you have so much to look forward to. You

are getting to do amazing things. You work at a preschool and you get to love on kids everyday.

You’re going to college to be a teacher; you’ve always wanted to do that! You have a fiancé that

loves you and you’re getting married in August. You finally learned how to play the guitar. You

enjoy running again and you and your mom are good. Every summer you’re a camp counselor

and get to be a light to kids of all ages. You are getting to be the person you want to be now.

High school is scary Mattie, and I don’t blame you for trying to fit in or trying to be who

others want you to be. Just know you can make it through. I’m your living proof you made it

through. You’re going to struggle and life isn’t magically perfect once you leave Coweta. In fact,

you miss Coweta most of the time, but you like who you are and you’re proud of who you are.

Be proud to know that you’re not the same person and college was really good for you. Keep

your head up, you’re going to do great!
