BAE 1201: Air

conditioning systems
Air conditioning systems

Definition-

Air conditioning (often referred to as A/C or AC) is the process of

altering the properties of air (primarily temperature and humidity) to
more comfortable conditions, typically with the aim of distributing the
conditioned air to an occupied space such as a building or a vehicle to
improve thermal comfort and indoor air quality.

Factors affecting comfort Air conditioning

1. Temperature of air
2. Humidity of air
3. Purity of air
4. Motion of air

[See Khurmi’s book for description]

Comfort air conditioning System
• DBT and RH is brought to the desired level.
• It is assumed that 21°C DBT and 55% RH to be the ideal
comfort level.
• Designing the AC system is also critical from the SHF point of
view.
1. For residence or private office, SHF= 0.9
2. For Restaurant or busy office, SHT=0.8
3. For Auditorium or cinema hall, SHF=0.7
4. For Ball room or very large convention centre, SHF=0.6
Types of Air Conditioning Systems

• Window Air Conditioning

• Split Air Conditioning
• Packaged Air Conditioning
• Central Air Conditioning

Winter Air conditioning system
• Problem#1 (ch-38, example 38.6)
A small office hall with a capacity of 30 people is provided with summer air
conditioning system with the following data:
• Outside conditions: 35ºC DBT and 25ºC WBT;
• Inside conditions: 25ºC DBT and 50% RH;
• Volume of air supplied: 0.4 m3/min/person;
• Sensible heat load in room: 1256000 kJ/h;
• Latent heat load in the room: 420000 kJ/h.
Compute the sensible heat factor of the given space.

• Problem#2 (ch-38, example 38.5)

An air conditioning plant is to be designed for a small office for winter
conditions with the following data:
• Outdoor conditions = 10°C DBT and 8°C WBT
• Required indoor conditions = 20°C DBT and 60% RH
• Amount of air supplied = 0.3 m³/min/person
• Seating capacity of office = 50 persons
The required condition is achieved first by heating and then by adiabatic
humidifying.
Find: 1.heating capacity of the coil in kW and 2. capacity of the humidifier.
• Group Assignment (problems to be solved in the class)

• Problem#1(similar to example 38.4, ch-38):

An office hall of 300 persons capacity is provided with summer air
conditioning system with the following data:
• Outdoor conditions = 30°C DBT and 60% RH
• Required conditions = 24°C DBT and 55% RH
• Amount of air supplied = 0.4 m³/min/person
Find the sensible heat and latent heat removed from the air per
minute. Also, find the sensible heat factor for the system.

• Problem#2(similar to example 37.11, ch-37):

Atmospheric air at a dry bulb temperature of 15oC and humidity of 5
gm moisture/kg dry air passes through a furnace and then through a
humidifier, in such a way that the final dry bulb temperature is 25oC
and humidity ratio is 15 gm moisture/kg dry air. Using psychrometric
chart, determine: i. heat added to air, ii. moisture added to air, iii.
original and final relative humidity, iv. original and final wet bulb
temperature and v. sensible heat factor of the process
