Part I: Multiple choice questions

Choose the correct Answer Note there might be more than one choice for one question (Each 1 Points) and
you can take any acceptable assumptions if necessary only

1. A piston/cylinder with a cross-sectional area of 0.01 m^2 is resting on the stops. With an outside pressure of 100
kPa, what should be the water pressure to lift the piston?
A) 178kPa B) 188kPa C) 198kPa D) 208kPa
2. Choose the correct answer ;For a pure sub cooled liquid
A. The pressure is lower than the vapor pressure at the same temperature.
B. The quality will be zero
C. The all the other properties except pressure are lower than the saturation values at the given pressure
or temperature
D. All
3. The normal boiling temperature of water is lower in “RasDashen “Mountain than in Mekelle City.
A. True B. False
4. The critical point of a pure substance:
A. Represents the highest temperature and pressure for which saturated liquid and saturated vapor
can coexist.
B. is the point at which a single Horizontal line can be drawn.
C. is where vapor pressure has its largest possible value.
D. None
5. Which one of the statements is correct?
A. In a closed System the volume of the system is always fixed
B. In a Control Volume System, the volume of the system may change after boundary selection
C. It is not possible to fix the state of a system if we have two independent and intensive property
D. The best system for analysis of Universe is closed system
6. The atmospheric pressure at a location is 90 Kpa, what is its value in English system of unit in psi
A. 12 psi B. 14 psi C. 13. Psi D.15 psi

7. Which one of the following is true about the diagram given below?

1
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Heat of vaporization increases as the saturation pressure decreases
B. The specific volume of the saturated liquid decreases as the saturation temperature increases
C. The specific volume of the saturated vapor decreases as the saturation temperature increases.
D. None
8. Find the pressure of water at 200°C and having specific volume of 1.5 m 3/kg
A) 141.6 kPa B) 111.6 kPa C) 121.6 kPa D) 161.6 kPa
Part II2: Numerical problem [4 point]

1. Two kilograms of water at 25°C are placed in a piston cylinder device under 100 kPa pressure as shown in the
diagram (State (1)). Heat is added to the water at constant pressure until the piston reaches the stops at a total
volume of 0.4 m3 (State (2)). More heat is then added at constant volume until the temperature of the water
reaches 300°C (State (3)). Determine (a) the quality of the fluid and the mass of the vapor at state (2), and (b)
the pressure of the fluid at state (3) [4 point]

2. Consider a double-fluid manometer attached to an air pipe shown in Fig. P1–76. If the specific
gravity of one fluid is 13.55, determine the specific gravity of the other fluid for the indicated
absolute pressure of air. Take the atmospheric pressure to be 100 kPa[5point].

3. Show /derive that quality (x ) of a thermodynamic systems is given by the following equation

Where y may be specific volume, enthalpy, internal energy, or entropy [3 point]
