“The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them

without doing anything” (Albert Einstein). The concept of corruption is not new to anyone who

watches the news or reads articles. Many business men or people in politics have been known to

have been involved corruption to either gain more money, power or for them gain a better or

higher position in society. In the play of Macbeth there is a portrayal of corruption when

Macbeth kills the king for him to become king. Lady Macbeth staged the death to make it seem

like someone else had murdered the king and Macbeth acted as if was innocent. The universal

theme of Macbeth is corruption, it also seen today in politics, movie industry and the music

industry.

Throughout the years, there has been many cases of corruption within the Mexican

government. There have been many cases in which shows that police officials work for the

cartel, often carrying out orders or simply taking bribes for them to do what they want. Ted

Carpenter states, “At one point, more than seven hundred officers were charged with offenses

ranging from taking bribes to drug-related kidnapping and murder” (Carpenter 5). It comes to

show how many police officers are willing to turn their back to the law, even though their job is

to protect the civilians, are willing to commit awful crimes for money. It is known that the

corrupt government officials do not like activism. Government officials have turned in activist to

the cartel, where they are then murdered. Mariano Castillo states, “The 43 Mexican students who

disappeared in southern Mexico in September were abducted by police on order of a local mayor

and are believed to turned over to a gang that killed them” (Castillo 1). The Iguala Mayor Jose

Luis Abarca was arrest for being the one to have created the plan in adducting the students. The

mayor wanted them to be gone because the students were on their way to protest one of his

events, he selfishly did not want them to ruin his event.

There have also been cases where we can see corruption in the music industry where

many music producers have taken advantage of many singers for their personal benefit. Back in

2015 there was a huge case in which the singer Kesha first filed to be let out of her deal with Dr.

Luke’s label. The article states, “Four months later, she amended her injunction request, charging

that SME was aware of the alleged abuse against her and also knew about other alleged victims

of Dr. Luke” ( Tsioulcas 1). It comes to that even though Sony Music Entertainment is a huge

and well know company they are willing to hide the fact that there signed artist are being abused

in order to come out with hit songs in order to gain more money and publicity. Even though the

case had become a huge story and many other celebrities defended her, she was rejected from

leaving Dr. Luke’s label. Many celebrities and fans took her side, many fans protested Sony

outside of their offices. The author states, “Clarkson asserted that she had only worked with him

because she had been “literally … blacked” by her label, RCA, another subsidiary of SME”

( Tsioulcas 1 ). Dr. Luke had produced some of Kelly Clarkson most known and hit songs.

Through the years it has seemed as many more government officials have been taking

bribes from criminal groups for letting them get away with crimes they had committed. We have

also seen many more cases come out in the music industry of singers coming out and talked

about some of their old labels and how they were treated. In the past couple of years many

actresses have come out and places cases against movie directors and other male actors. In some

of the cases it was revealed that actresses had to do something in order to get more roles. The

actresses only recently have gathered the strength to finally let the media know what really

happens behind the scenes.
