a. Components

 The cables - The cables represent the first Layer of the OSI model which is the

physical layer. The physical layer is responsible for transmitting bits from one

computer to another and also governs the stream of bits transmission. In western bank

county scenario, the cables used are 10GB optical fiber and run at a speed of 10Gbps

which are then used for multiple connection for devices in the network.

 Switch – The switch would be in the 2nd layer of the OSI model which is the Data

Link Layer. In the Data Link Layer raw bits of information is taken from the physical

layer and then converted into packets. In western bank county scenario, the bank

requires high performance from the network and in-order to achieve the high

performance the switch is connected to the severs, routers and the datacenter. The

bank will indeed require to use a Net gear ProSafe switch in order to maintain high

speed connectivity.

 Wireless Access point - This is the device used for creating the quest network. This

device maintains a wireless connection to the web-based applications and operates in

the 2nd layer of the OSI model.

 Proxy server- The proxy server operates in the 4th layer of the OSI model which is the

Transport Layer. The transport layer manages the end to end control and handles error

recognition. The main purpose for this layer is to ensure completion of data transfers.

The proxy server also operates in the 5th layer of the OSI model which is the Session

Layer. The session layer manages the opening and closing of sessions between

different computers. The proxy server also operates in the 6th layer which is the

Presentation Layer. This layer is mainly responsible for delivering information to the
 last OSI model (7th Layer) which is application layer for processing and display. The

last Layer in which the proxy server works is the application layer which is the 7th

layer. This layer is responsible for displaying the processed information to the user.

The application layer supports file transfers, applications and emails.

The proxy server works from the 4 layers to the 7 layers of the OSI model. The proxy

server mainly assembles all received data packets in a transmission. When the proxy

server wants to send a transmission it first breaks down all packets before sending

them.

Data Center – This the device us to store all the confidential information about the

organization and its in one central location.

ISP- The ISP is the company that provides the bank with internet connection. As

shown in the diagram above there are two ISP to ensure the bank always has access to

internet connectivity.

b. Logical Functions – Logical functions comprise of the flow of information in a

network. Logical designs determine the overall performance, security, maintenance,

reliability and scalability of the network. Western county bank is divided into three

logical virtual networks in-order to meets its demands. The IP addresses assigned to

the various devices must be within the same range of the existing allocations and must

be of class C. Sub networking enhances the performance by minimizing broadcast

domains thus making it easy to manage the network. In case a network failure occurs,

it would be easier to troubleshoot a logical subdivided network. The storage area

network should also be configured to ensure that it can only be accessed via a router
 which has to offer filtering at the network layer. Storing data in the cache will provide

the high-performance western county bank is looking for since this will help the data

load faster if same data is requested.

c. Inter-connectivity devices- These devices purpose is to inter-connect various

components in the network to form a network. These devices include switches, hubs,

and routers. The fiber optic cables being used to connect to the devices run at a speed

of 10Gpbs and this allows high performance. In the western county bank scenario, the

additional router is used to enhance redundancy and helps to ensure there are no

outages during the transition and upgrade period. The old router needs to be discarded

since they will no longer be supported by the manufacturer. Western county bank

web-based application is integrated with a cloud environment to ensure their

customers can securely transact online.

. Explain how your network addresses the needs of Western County Bank in the

following areas:

a. Local area network (LAN) configuration – LAN is a computer network that

covers only a relatively small area. The LAN needed by the Western county bank

is for the setup of wireless networks for the employees and the guest as well. In

order to achieve this wireless access points have been installed in place at each

office for the office employees to connect to each other. In order to ensure

efficient flow of data in the network I set up them with a multiple layer 2virtual

LANS(VLANS). The VLANS will be configured to a new layer 3 virtual router

interface. The Net gear switches provide a constant connection and has the

capacity to support 100 ports to 100,000 server ports over the network. This

create a room for expansion in the future bank choose to expand its business. The
 Western county bank will have two internet connection for use in the bank. The

first internet connection is going to be connected to the main office in the data

center while the East branch will be connected to the other one. These two-

internet connections will both have Microsoft Forefront Threat Management

Gateway servers on them. The internet at the main office will server as the

primary internet service for the internal users in the bank while the east branch

internet connection will mainly serve as backup internet just in case the main

internet goes down.

b. Wide area network (WAN) configuration – Western county bank needed WAN

to provide 10Gbps links with a redundant internet access at a high speed for the

users. Western county bank has installed redundant routers at the WAN level

which meet the needs of the bank network infrastructure. The various offices of

the western county bank in different geographical areas are linked together using

a wide area Network topology. The WAN connects the other 2 branches, one

having 25 connections and the other one having 35 connections respectively.

 RAID storage – The RAID storage works in the first Layer of the OSI model the

physical layer. It uses a technology that has an automatic backup feature that saves

all the new company’s information without having to do anything.

  Access Point- The wireless access points is used to deliver wireless signals to the

users in the main building. These wireless signals are also used to access the web

applications and internet.

 Switches- The switches are used to connect to the servers, RAID storage and LAN

users operating over the network and operate at a speed of 10Gbps to the inter-

connecting devices.

 Servers- Western county has multiple servers on site. These servers are file,

database, mail server and web which offer different features to the employees and

guest. The servers operating in various OSI model ranging from 4, 5, and 6 layers.

 Users- The users operate in the 7th layer of the OSI model and its about the

applications the users use on a daily basis.

B. Logical Features - The usage of Storage Area Network (SAN) on network is

achieved by using fiber channels on the Net gear switches. This allows faster

communication between the switches having the data and the storage unit. The

SAN is used to store the banks data separately.

C. Interconnectivity Devices- This would be the cabling being used. The fiber

optic cables that are being used to connect to the devices in network are able to

operate at a speed of 10Gbps.

Discuss how you would evaluate whether network performance meets organizational

availability, stability, and speed requirements.

How performance meets availability- All the severs and router in the system are well tested

for their proper functionality. If all is running well and smoothly then a scenario is simulated

where some of the servers and routers will automatically fail the test. If the remaining ones
can fully support the system by rendering the fundamental services then this assures that the

system has passed the availability test.

How performance meets Stability - this is mainly about how many failures can occur or can

be exhibited by a system whether it’s an unexpected or unintended behavior e.g. user

receiving errors or a failure that can bring the whole network down. The few errors observed

and noticed will lead to a stable network for the case of western county bank the power

supply can be tested for functionality by simulating a power outage and this is going to

measure the networks uptime and availability of networking resources.

How performance meets speed requirements- The main reason for upgrade of the western

county bank is online capabilities and mobility outages so as to ensure the new system

conforms to the requirements when tested individually. A way to test the network connection

would be using the ping function. The ping function is used to test the connection between

the devices if the users receives a reply then the network is connected and if there is no reply

no connection. Using ping helps the user know how long it takes to reach the destination.

Conclusion

Western Bank is concerned with the overall manageability of the network and network

devices they have not selected a monitoring suite but suite but are interested in standardized

their protocols for device administration and monitoring and to meets the banks need their

require SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol).
