Technical Communication Companies Reflection

I did not know that a society for technical communication exists before visiting their

website. The society for technical communication is a professional association focused on the

advancement of the field of technical communication. Their members are diverse spanning from

students to practitioners and managers. This is surprising to me that anyone in the field of

technical communication can join this society. To join the society for technical communication

you have to pay depending on who you are depending whether you are a student ($75), New

professional ($180), Professional and Academic ($225), or unless you want the gold membership

($395). If you join the society for technical communication then you get access to numerous

resources. Many learning resources, discounts, access to their job database, and a network with

many professionals. You can become a certified professional technical communicator through

the society for technical communication. Becoming certified seems like that it is an incredibly

helpful thing to do. On their website they have a testimonial form David stick who says that the

certification was evidence that he had credentials, and serious about his career. Being certified

helped him make $20,000 more and have an office instead of a cubicle. This really shows how

recognized this society is that a certification from them helps increase job opportunities for

people in the field of technical communication. After viewing the society for technical

communications website I learned that there is a big well recognized society for technical

communication advances the field of technical communication, helps people in the field of
technical communication network, and certifies people as a certified technical communicator.

The most surprising thing that I learned was that the feild of technical communicaion

encomapses many if not all academic fields including my field of health.

The National Association of Science Writers works to improve their craft and encourage

conditions that promote good science writing. There are only 2,481 members and 413 students

which is surprisingly low. They have their own constitution, bylaws, code of ethics, and

operating principles which they operate by. They also administer two awards The science in

society awards, Excellence in Institutional Writing Awards. They hold an annual event called the

annual ScienceWriters conference which puts on professional development workshops, briefings

on scientific research, and lab tours and science field trips.

You have to pay to join both organizations which is new to me, but after further thought

it makes sense because it helps to fund the organization and you get access to countless

resources. Both organizations not only have professionals in technical communication as

members, but also students which is nice because it helps students feel connected, and network

with others in the field of technical communication. The society for Technical Communication

certified people of certified technical communicators which helps people in the field of technical

communication have better job opportunities and better their craft of technical communication. I

was also surprised to learn that technical communication is a field that overlaps many if not all

fields even my own of health.
