MAC Model United Nations

Committee: The European Union

Topic: Persisting with maximum efficiency after Brexit

I. Theme of the conference
Mac Model United Nations (MACMUN) is a conference designed to encourage stimulating
and authentic debate upon various world crises among every delegate in each committee.
Model UN members are excited to share the theme of this conference: Change. Chosen
topics emphasize the crucial economic, political, and social dilemmas that are collectively
affecting the function of numerous countries in all regions of the world. Delegates have the
opportunity to present their original possible solutions, along with the perspective of their
assigned country. By collaborating with fellow committee members to form concrete
solutions, delegates will experience the power to make real change for our collective future.

II. Rationale
Traced back to the very origin of the European Union (EU) and the debate over admission of the
United Kingdom, Brexit has been long coming. After years of debate and delays, the United
Kingdom has left the European Union. The loss has been felt through the loss of their £13.1
billion membership fee (factoring the expenses of £4.5 billion equaling out to a an £8.5 billion
loss). Additionally the EU is a single market where imports and exports between members are
tariff exempt, meaning, valuable free trade with the UK will be lost. As of Spring this year, 2020,
the United Kingdom left the union and now it is faced with losses in financing, freedom of trade,
deficits in the joint military intervention force.

III. Background of the Topic

Margaret Thatcher talked tough to reduce the British payments to the EU, and being the third
poorest nation in the community, this was granted and remained in place through the end. It
reduced Britain’s contribution to the EU and can be considered the UK’s first toe out the door.
Following were multiple spats over menial things including British chocolate. In 2011, Prime
minister David Cameron became the UK prime minister and vetoed an EU Treaty, leading to
promises to “renegotiate membership in the EU.” With recent economic unrest in the eurozone,
and the migrant crisis, support for Brexit increased. In May 2015 Cameron set out to fulfill his
MAC Model United Nations

promises in renegotiating the U.K.’s membership including changes in migrant welfare

payments, financial safeguards and easier ways for Britain to block EU regulations. In June 2016
the UK held a referendum in which England and Wales voted in favor of Brexit. After the slim
passing of the referendum, Theresa May, the new UK prime minister, announced officially that
Britain would be leaving the EU.

IV. Contemporary Evidence of the Topic

Brexit is not the end of the European Union, but it will be difficult to overcome their loss. The
EU must renegotiate defense that England is involved in, calculate the risks of losing the second
greatest economic force from the union, and rehash every EU agreement that England has voted
on. The UK also has 24 representatives on the European Economic and Social Committee, and
18 representatives on the European Committee of the Region. This is undoubtedly a time
sensitive issue and must be solved and agreed upon with diligence. The UK leaving the European
Union is a deficit and now requires thorough redistribution of EU affairs, budgeting, and
defense.
