As a general rule, I
have worked to keep
my parents very
informed about what is
happening in our class
and to keep them
involved. At our school,
as a policy we do not
have many
opportunities to invite
the parents into our
classes but they are
“actively engaged” in
terms of being
involved in school
events and the projects
that we do when their
kids take them home.
It’s very important for
me to have our parents
feel included and to see
the work that their
kids are putting into
their learning. Quite
frequently, one way
that we keep families
CSTP 6: Developing as a Professional Educator
engaged is by asking
the kids to become the
“experts” and teach
their parents about
what they have learned
in class. In this way,
our parents remain
actively involved in our
school and our
learning. Traditionally,
our parents are very
achievement oriented
and because I come
from the same faith
background, I am very
well aware of their
expectations and/or
concerns. I work very
diligently to make sure
that I communicate
with them openly and
am available to answer
any questions or
discuss any of their
concerns. I feel that my
parents really
appreciate my
transparency as a
teacher and keeping
them in the loop has
been a great way to
help my parents feel
engaged in our classes.

As Lighthouse
Coordinator this year, I
have had a great
opportunity to reach
out to families and
establish paths for our
families to get involved
at school and with
leadership on our
campus.
Communicating the
importance of family
participation at our
school is really well
received by our
families and they love
to engage with our
initiatives. Bringing
our families on board
with both academic
and social goals at our
school has also had a
great impact on the
success of our
School-Wide Goals and
it is always really

myself available to my
colleagues, especially
as the Lighthouse
Coordinator, as a
mentor and as a

them achieve their

As Lighthouse
Coordinator this year, I
feel really blessed to be
able to interact with
and support my
colleagues in a way
that I have not been a

part of before. It is very
gratifying, after being
at our school for 4
years, to be a mentor
and to help my new
colleagues acclimate
and understand the
traditions and
expectations at our
school. It is important
for me to always model
respectful and
professional behavior
with my peers, but also
to be friends and be a
kind ear to listen when
they need support or
just to vent. I have
stated earlier that I
have instated my own
ways to keep morale
and motivation high
amongst teachers. This
includes a weekly
email of funny memes
to keep our teachers
laughing together and
dropping treats to
teachers (everyone
loves chocolate!) when
they are having a
rough time. I think that
it is a blessing to have a
positive mindset and if
I can share it with
others around me, I
CSTP 6: Developing as a Professional Educator
think that a little bit of
sunshine goes a long
way! As a mentor, I
have also been
afforded a unique
opportunity to provide
real support and
scaffolds for
homeroom teachers
when it comes to
implementing the
leadership initiatives
that it is my role to
design. By listening to
teacher feedback and
making different
processes very “user
friendly” I can ensure
that my teachers are
able to take the
material to the kids
and help ensure their
students’ success.

Our school is an Independent Faith-Based School and
I am very cognizant of the important link that our
faith has with our profession. I see my position as a
teacher as an opportunity to have a positive influence
on the new generation of young Muslims and I take
that very seriously. Each year the new batch of
students becomes a part of my “family” and I believe
in having a strong sense of trust with them. We have
mutual respect and I model a high standard of
personal integrity to help guide them to do the same
in their lives. I strive to do my best in all of my
professional endeavors and bring my faith and the
ethics that come along with it to school every day.
