Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) Competencies

Competency 001: The teacher understands human development processes and applies this

knowledge to plan instruction and ongoing assessment that motivate students and are responsive

to their developmental characteristics and needs.

● The teacher knows that all students develop in a different way and that this process of

development is affected by many social, economic, and familial factors. The teacher will prepare

the lesson plan and activities according to the student's needs and encourage them to apply the

knowledge in their daily life.

Competency 002: The teacher understands student diversity and knows how to plan learning

experiences and design assessments that are responsive to differences among students and

that
promote all students’ learnings.

● The teacher recognizes that there is a diversity of students. Each student has a different

background, language, culture, and learning style, the teacher will elaborate the class and the

activities considering all these factors so that all the students understand the class in an

entertaining way, and they can acquire the necessary knowledge.

Competency 003: The teacher understands procedures for designing effective and coherent

instruction and assessment based on appropriate learning goals and objectives.

 ● The teacher will establish the objectives and then follow the pedagogical process to

develop lesson plans that are effective and consistent with the student’s age and learning

style.

Competency 004: The teacher understands learning processes and factors that impact student

learning and demonstrates this knowledge by planning effective, engaging instruction and

appropriate assessments.

● The teacher recognizes that each student has a different learning style and that there are

different cultural, familial, economic, and among others factors that affect the way of

learning of each student based on these factors, the teacher will elaborate the appropriate

activities that satisfy the needs of each student.

Competency 005: The teacher knows how to establish a classroom climate that fosters learning,

equity, and excellence and uses this knowledge to create a physical and emotional environment

that is safe and productive.

● The teacher is capable to establish a safe, comfortable, a trusty classroom in which all students

would feel motivated to learn in an equitable, enjoyable and pleasant way.

Competency 006: The teacher understands strategies for creating an organized and productive

learning environment and for managing student behavior.

● The teacher knows the behavior of each of the students and is able to establish strategies to

control each of them, the teacher based in this knowledge creates a harmonious classroom in

which all students learn effectively and organized.

Competency 007:The teacher understands and applies principles and strategies for

communicating effectively in varied teaching and learning contexts.

● The teacher is able to use the knowledge and language and appropriate strategies for each

communicating with the students depending on the situation in which they are and that they can

capture the information without any problem.

Competency 008: The teacher provides appropriate instruction that actively engages students in

the learning process.

● The teacher will develop different types of clear, dynamic, and interesting activities to motivate

students to participate and be more receptive to learn.

Competency 009: The teacher incorporates the effective use of technology to plan, organize,

deliver and evaluate instruction for all students.

● The teacher is prepared to incorporate the use of new technology to elaborate the appropriate

lesson plans and assessment for the students, also, the teacher uses the technology to evaluate

academic performance.

Competency 010: The teacher monitors student performance and achievement; provides

students with timely, high-quality feedback; and responds flexibly to promote learning for all

students.

● The teacher is aware of all the academic development of the students, and provides them with the

best possible attention and education.

Competency 011: The teacher understands the importance of family involvement in

children’s
education and knows how to interact and communicate effectively with families.

● The teacher is aware that the family plays the main role in the education of each student,

therefore, the teacher knows how to involve the family in the academic development of each

student.
 Competency 012: The teacher enhances professional knowledge and skills by effectively

interacting with other members of the educational community and participating in various types

of professional activities.

● The teacher participates in academic programs designed to establish relationships and share of

knowledge between the members, knowledge that will later be used to improve the performance

of each teacher in the classrooms.

Competency 013: The teacher understands and adheres to legal and ethical requirements for

educators and is knowledgeable of the structure of education in Texas.

● The teacher is aware that there are laws and procedures previously established by the State of

Texas to solve different situations that occur in classrooms.
