Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Counting Money

Objectives:

Students will be able to apply their skill of counting money in the real world.

Students will be able to use this app to practice the skill of using coins to get to a
particular sum.
State Standards:

2.MDA.7 Solve real-world/story problems involving dollar bills using the $ symbol or
involving quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies using the ¢ symbol.

Context:
I am teaching this lesson to show the children a digital way of learning how to count money.
Before learning how to count money students will learn how to tell time on a clock. The students
can use the previous knowledge of time increments to help with making a particular sum of
money. After this lesson they will learn how to read a line plot and read data. To prepare the
students for the next lesson I will use coins as increments which can be used in a line plot.

Data:
The students will be grouped by their assigned seating. The hypothetical data will be based on
how well the students do on their end of the lesson test. It will be collected on google classroom.
Materials:
The materials that I will needs are certain amount of coins, iPad and a smart board.
Procedures:
Introduction (10 mins):
For the first ten minutes of class, the students will go to their new assigned seating for the
week. On the smartboard in the front of the classroom there will be pictures of a quarter, dime,
nickel and a penny with the amount that each coin is. I will review the money material that we
had learned previously last class. I will review just to make sure everyone is on the same page.
Teacher Directed (10 mins):
In this group I will have already prepared a certain amount of coins in a bag for each
table. Each table will have the same amount of coins for each coin. I will join each group and
give them a random but doable amount to construct within their groups.
Collaborative (10 mins):
In a collaborative group, I will have each group act as teams. On the smart board I

through the quizzes. Each “team” will attempt to solve the question the fastest. They have to
solve it correctly to get a point. Whichever team has the most points after 5 rounds will win a
homework pass.
Independent Digital (10 mins):
For the last active ten minutes, each student will have an ipad. On the ipad they will use

sections of this lesson they were working together but playing this app will let them figure t out
individually.
Closure (10 mins):
In the last ten minutes of the lesson I will remind everyone about how there will be a quiz
on this material on Google classroom due tonight.

I chose this piece of multimedia because it can be used by all of the kids on their iPad. It
supports student learning because the children get to independently work on their coin
skills. It will help my standards and objectives because they learn the coins and can apply
this to the real world with using money. I know it is high quality because it has a 4.2 / 5
rating on iTunes. This app can be used for students of disabilities because the brightness
on the iPad can be turned up for students who can’t see as well.

I chose this website because it is a great source for teachers and students since it provides
games, quizzes and videos. It supports student learning by providing resources for them
to practice at home. It supports my standards and objectives by having souces for
recognizing coins and a section for payment, which is using this in the real world. This
website can be used by all students since a student can modify the volume and zoom in
feature to view the website easier.
