Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students will engage with the activity through choice, authentic exploration, and creative
freedom to design their product however they like.

Representation: The ability to draw conclusions from the clues will be aided by their making a visual/graphic
organizer for the information. Thus, in addition to creating a product, they will be using their own product to
come to conclusions.

Action and Expression: The visual organizer provides for an outlet of expression, as they are free to choose
their design and what information does or doesn’t make it onto the list/chart.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will do this activity as a penultimate assessment of their knowledge and skill in foreshadowing,
succeeded only by a summative assessment test. They will have read the short story, The Veldt, and will have
been introduced to the concept of foreshadowing already. They will work in partners for this assignment, and
will have access to the computer lab and be allowed to work on it outside of the classroom. Visme does not
have an inherent web sharing feature, but they can use peripherals like Google Docs to share
information/draft.

The most important part of this activity, and what they will be primarily assessed on, is their conclusion. So
long as their conclusions are based on the evidence they compile, their end product will be assessed
positively. The design choices they make will have no effect on their grade for this product. The thought here
is that an independent activity that asks the student to take an authentic role and synthesize their own
conclusions will prepare them to use foreshadowing for a final unit assessment.

Reflective Practice:

The activity I’ve chosen allow students to take the wheel in exercising their literary skills, and to do so
cooperatively. Because Visme does not have cooperative/sharing features, I encourage students to use
Google Docs or similar collaborative web apps to complete the project with their partners outside of class.
