1 Model / Problem Description

The cantilever beam shown below is loaded by a single point load of magnitude 1000 N and
applying the load at point C it located in the X - direction. The length of the beam is 140cm and and
the beam divide into 3 material which is material 1, material 2, and material 3. The material 1
length is 50cm, material 2,is 40cm, and for material 3 is 50cm. the material have different cross
section, the material 1 is 5cm², material 2 is 2cm² and for the material 3 is equal 5cm². The material
have a different Young’s modulus ( E ), material 1 is 69GPa, E for material 2 is 101GPa and for
the material 3 E is equal to 73GPa. The poisson ratio is 0,3 and all material are same.

2 Finite Element Model

2.1 Element Model

The cantilever beam is modeled as two dimensional and divide into three material. Each material
has own cross section and different length. The total number of elements is 6 elements. The
illustration of the meshing is shown in Figure below.
 The unit used in this model is a
consistent SI unit
 Total length is 140 cm
 The cantilever beam has apply load 1000 N

2.2 Constraint

To represent a fixed end at the cantilever beam all nodes at the left end is constraint in x
axis. . They are not allowed to move in y axis and z axis, using disply=0 and rotz=0. The
direction moving at x axis using displx=0 . The constraint can be seen in figure 1.

2.3 Loading

A concentrated load is represent by indicating as a negative direction in x – direction,

forcex = -1000N. Negative value here indicates that the direction is opposite of the x-
direction.

3 Result and Short Discussion

The displacement magnitude and tensile stress at user defined point are shown in Figure 2
and Figure 3. By looking at the magnitude displacement of the deformed beam, it clearly
shown that the free end will be mostly deformed. The largest displacement is the tip where
the concentrated load is applied. The value of the displacement is 6.392628E-03 m.

4 Conclusion

Based on simulation result, there are some result that can be derived:

i. The cantilever will bending with the largest displacement 6.392628E-03 m.

ii. High concentration stress occur at lower left corner region where the cantilever is
fixed.
iii. The other result can be referred in Figure 4.
