Quiz 4 Revision

1. An electrolytic cell is set-up to study the product of electrolysis for copper (II)
sulphate aqueous solution.

graphite

copper (II) sulphate

1.0 mol dm-3

(a) (i) State and explain the product of electrolysis at cathode of the cell. [2 marks]

(ii) Write the half equation occur at anode [1 mark]

…………………………………………………………………………………………………

(b) Explain the observations occur in the electrolytic cell if both graphite electrodes are replaced
with copper plate. [2 marks]

(c) Calculate the mass of copper formed at cathode if 1.50 A is supplied to the cell for 2 hours.
[Faraday's constant: 96500 C mol-1] [3 marks]
2. (a) Stearic acid (C18H36O2) is a typical fatty acid, a molecule with a long hydrocarbon
chain and an organic acid group (COOH) at the end of chain. In order to determine
the enthalpy change of combustion for stearic acid, 2.50 g of stearic acid is placed in a
bomb calorimeter, and is ignited afterward. This results the temperature in calorimeter
to increase by 17.00C. The same calorimeter is then calibrated using benzoic acid
(C6H5COOH) as standard solution, where 1.22 g of benzoic acid when ignited
caused the temperature in calorimeter to increased by 7.80C.
[Given the enthalpy change of combustion for benzoic acid is - 3230 kJ mol-1 ; molar
mass of benzoic acid and stearic acid are 122 g mol-1 and 284 g mol-1 respectively]
(i) Define enthalpy change of combustion for stearic acid [2 marks]
(ii) Using the information above, calculate the enthalpy change of combustion for
stearic acid.
[7 marks]

(b) Potassium chloride produced is used for making fertilizer, since the growth of many
plants is limited by their potassium intake. A few enthalpy change involved potassium
chloride is given in table below.

Enthalpy terms ∆H / kJ mol-1

Enthalpy change of hydration of potassium ion - 352
Enthalpy change of hydration of chloride ion - 364
Lattice energy of potassium chloride - 701

Using the information above, draw a Hess cycle to calculate the enthalpy change
of solubility, ∆Hsoln, potassium chloride solution. Based on the cycle constructed
and the value calculated, explain the solubility of potassium chloride in water.
