ABSTRACT

Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) is a reactor that runs at steady state with continuous
flow of reactants and products (1). CSTR 40L is an experiment that is conducted to reach
several objectives which are to carry out manual conversion determination on experiment
samples to verify the conductivity measurement values, to carry out a saponification reaction
between NaOH and Et(Ac) in CSTR, to determine the effect of residence time onto the
reaction extent of conversion and to determine the reaction of rate constant. In this
experiment, both reactants NaOH and Et(Ac) are fed into the CSTR with equimolar flow rate
for a certain time. From Graph 1, graph conductivity versus conversion, it shows that the
conductivity decreases proportionally to the conversion. As a result in Graph 2, graph
conversion versus time, the residence time is increase proportionally to the conversion. The
highest conversion is 99% at 200 min residence time and the lowest conversion at 66.67 min
is 87.6%.
