How to Deploy the ProxySG

ProxySG appliances comprise an integral part of your enterprise’s Application Delivery
Network (ADN) and provide acceleration, optimization, and caching features that
optimize and secure the flow of information to any user. Your ProxySG can also function
as a Secure Web Gateway (SWG) that protects your network from malware and
spyware, prevents data leakage, and ensures user compliance with corporate
networking guidelines.
Configuration steps vary by the licensed software edition for the ProxySG (Proxy or
MACH5), and whether you deploy the appliance in‐path or virtually in‐path.
Software Editions Your ProxySG appliance ships with a software license for one of two

editions:
• Proxy: a software edition that includes both SWG and ADN features
• MACH5: a software edition streamlined for ADN (acceleration) deployments
Typical Topologies ProxySG appliances are commonly deployed directly in the data

path or virtually in‐path where a switch or router redirects data to the ProxySG.
• In‐path: the ProxySG is physically inserted into the path of the clients and
servers—all traffic must pass through the appliance
• Virtually in‐path: the ProxySG appliance is not in the physical path of clients and
servers, but relies on an external device (for example, a switch or router that
supports WCCP) to redirect traffic to the ProxySG

information about the appliance and your network. Use the workflow below to
determine which setup script applies to you, and then complete the designated setup

Configuring Hardware Components

ProxySG models range in size from compact desktop models to high‐capacity
appliances with multiple hard drives and option cards. In addition, most models ship
with rack‐mount hardware. Before rack‐mounting your appliance, install any additional
hardware components such as option cards.

Installing Hard Drives (510, 810, and 8100 models only)

Hard drives for ProxySG models 510, 810, and 8100 ship in a separate package. To install
drives in these ProxySG models:
1. Unpack your appliance and place it with the front bezel overhanging the front of a
sturdy work surface. Push in the tabs on either side and fold the front bezel down.
2. Unpack the hard drive(s).

Offload Cards. If the option card is not pre‐installed, refer to its installation instructions
and install the card now.

Power-Off Traffic Verification

If your ProxySG appliance will be installed in the data path, verify that network traffic
passes through the appliance when it is powered off.
1. Connect the ProxySG to your network (but do not connect the power cord). If you
are installing in‐path, network traffic will be interrupted as you insert the appliance
into the data path.

remote computer on the far side:

Connecting to the Network

Note: If this ProxySG appliance will be deployed in a remote location or if the network is
not currently accessible, you can skip this optional step .
You can either connect the ProxySG appliance to the network now, or after the appliance
is configured and physically installed (“Rack‐Mounting the ProxySG” on page 25).
Consider connecting to the network now if:
• You can configure the appliance in‐place (that is, connected to the network at its
deployment location)
• You wish to verify server addresses and link settings during the configuration
process (automatic when configuring through the serial port)

Configuring the ProxySG for In-Path Acceleration

Note: This procedure applies to those who completed “Setup Checklist: In-Path
Acceleration Solution” on page 8.
This procedure describes how to quickly configure the ProxySG for in‐path acceleration
only, and sets Sky Management Console as the default interface. The final step of the
configuration wizard gives you the option to activate acceleration immediately.
• Choose Yes to accelerate default services between this appliance and other
ProxySG appliances on your network
• Choose No if you wish to manage acceleration for each individual service. The
ProxySG will operate in bypass mode and not accelerate any traffic. You can then
observe the types of traffic on your network, decide which services to accelerate,
and assess the effects of acceleration on a per‐application basis.
1. Connect a null modem (serial) cable between a computer or terminal and the serial
port on the ProxySG.
2. Connect the ProxySG to power and toggle the power switch (on models without
power switches, the appliance will power on immediately).
3. Configure the terminal or terminal emulation software (such as HyperTerminal):
■ Baud rate: 9600 bps
■ Parity: None
■ Flow control: None
■ Data bits: 8
■ Stop bits: 1
4. Press <Enter> three times to activate the serial console and display the installed
version of SGOS software:
■ Version 5.4.x and higher: continue with the next step
■ Version 5.3.x and lower: select Setup Console and refer to “Setup Checklist: All
Other Deployments” on page 9 to enter information as prompted. When
finished, continue with “Step 3: Installing the ProxySG” on page 23.
5. From the SG Appliance Serial Console menu, select Setup Console to launch the
configuration wizard.
6. Refer to “Setup Checklist: In‐Path Acceleration Solution” on page 8 and enter
information as prompted. If your ProxySG is connected to the network, the
configuration wizard will attempt to verify server addresses and auto‐detect link
settings. If it is not connected to the network, you will be prompted for link speed
and duplex settings.

7. Once you answer all questions, a summary screen lets you review all settings and
make any needed corrections:

Note: This procedure applies to those who completed “Setup Checklist: All Other
Deployments” on page 9.
The following procedures explain how to configure the ProxySG for any type of
deployment, and set the Management Console as the default interface:

• “Configuration Using the Front Panel” on page 20
Configuration Using the Serial Port

To configure the ProxySG using the serial port, do the following:
3. Configure the terminal or terminal emulation software (such as HyperTerminal):
■ Parity: None
■ Data bits: 8
■ Stop bits: 1
4. Press <Enter> three times to activate the serial console.
5. From the SG Appliance Serial Console menu, select Setup Console to launch the
configuration wizard.
6. Choose a configuration method:
■ Manual Setup: choose this method unless you are registering this ProxySG
with a Director (Blue Coat’s central management solution).
■ Register with Director: choose this method to register this ProxySG with
Director. You will need the Director’s IP address and registration password.
7. Refer to “Setup Checklist: All Other Deployments” on page 9 and enter information
as prompted. If your ProxySG is connected to the network, the configuration wizard
will attempt to verify server addresses and auto‐detect link settings. If it is not
connected to the network, you will be prompted for link speed and duplex settings.

Configuration Using the Front Panel

On some ProxySG models, you can configure the appliance using a front panel keypad
and LCD screen.

To configure the ProxySG using the front panel:
2. When the boot cycle finishes, the LCD displays IP address not configured. Press any
button to display configuration options and enter Configure mode (the LCD
displays Setup Mode? Manual).
3. Press the Down button to display the IP address.
4. Press the Enter button to enter Edit mode (cursor changes to a blinking box).
5. Using the Right and Left buttons, position the cursor over the characters and press
the Up or Down buttons to change them.
6. When finished, press the Enter button to save changes and return to Configure
mode.
7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 to specify the Subnet mask, Gateway address, DNS
address, console password, and enable password.
8. When the LCD reads Console password: Push to set, press the Enter button to
display an auto‐generated password. Either write down this password (you can
change it later in the Management Console), or press the Enter button again to
change it now. You will need this password to log on to the appliance.
9. Optional: Secure the serial console port with a password.

! Caution: If you lose the serial console password, you must restore the appliance to its
original factory defaults to regain serial console access.
10. When prompted, select the software edition (Proxy or MACH5) licensed for this
ProxySG.
11. Press the Menu button to exit Configuration mode.
12. In‐path deployments only: to verify that network traffic will pass through the
appliance when it is powered on and configured, from a local computer on the near
side of the ProxySG, issue a ping request to a remote computer on the far side:

Installation Overview
All ProxySG models can be installed in standard 19‐inch racks or secured to a sturdy
shelf or table‐top. The following table lists rack‐mounting options for each ProxySG
model:

Rack-Mounting the ProxySG

To mount your ProxySG appliance to a four‐post rack using slide rails, refer to the
instructions that accompany the slide rail kit. To mount your ProxySG in a standard,
two‐post 19‐inch equipment rack:
1. Power off the appliance and disconnect all cables.
2. Find a location on the rack with space to mount the ProxySG, adequate power, and

Licensing the ProxySG and Logging In

Now that your ProxySG appliance is configured and connected to the network, install
licenses, register the appliance, and verify its operating status. To activate the license,
you must log in to BlueTouch Online, Blue Coat’s customer service portal, to register the
appliance and download a license.
e Tip: Your ProxySG ships with a temporary (60-day) license. You can register your
appliance at any time during that period.
Register and License the ProxySG

To register and license your ProxySG now, open a Web browser and navigate to:
■ https://hypersonic.bluecoat.com/
(customers with an existing BlueTouch Online or WebPower account), or
■ http://www.bluecoat.com/support/customercare (new customers)
Follow the instructions to register your appliance and download a license.
Log on to the ProxySG

Log on to your ProxySG using a Web browser (refer to the SGOS release notes for a list
of supported browsers):
1. Open a Web browser.
2. Disable the browser’s pop‐up blocker or configure it to allow pop‐ups from the
ProxySG appliance’s IP address.
3. Log on using https by entering any of the IP addresses assigned to the appliance,

Verifying In-Path Acceleration Deployments

If you configured your ProxySG for an in‐path acceleration deployment, Sky
Management Console is the default user interface. The Monitor tab serves as the home
page of Sky Management Console, and displays panes for Device Status, Bandwidth
Usage, and Optimized Throughput:

To verify your ProxySG deployment:
1. In the Device Status pane:
a. Check the Alerts section for warnings and error messages. For details or to take
action, click the message.
b. If you chose to activate acceleration immediately during configuration, check
the Acceleration Status section to verify that acceleration is enabled and the
identity of peer ProxySG appliances. Click a setting to change it.
c. In the Deployment Status section, verify the speed, duplex, and link settings for
each interface. Click a setting to make a correction.
2. In the Bandwidth Usage pane, verify that traffic passes through the ProxySG. If
acceleration is active, the displayed graphs show both actual and effective
throughput for the top bandwidth protocols.
3. In the Optimized Throughput pane, review the benefits of acceleration (if active).

2. Review information in the Banner:
a. ProxySG identification: the appliance name, model, serial number, and software
version.
b. ProxySG health status: the health state is represented by color‐coded text
(where green is OK, yellow is Warning, and red is Critical). To see the system’s
health monitoring metrics, click the link to display the Statistics > Health
Monitoring page.
c. License status and version: to view a list of the license components and their
expiration date, go to the Maintenance > Licensing > View tab. If not yet
licensed, the 60‐day trial license is enabled.
3. In the Navigation Links pane, go to Statistics > Device and verify connectivity with
the DNS server.

Accessing the Command Line Interface (CLI)

In addition to its graphical user interfaces, ProxySG appliances can be accessed and
configured through a Command Line Interface (CLI). To access the CLI:

switch (on models without power switches, the appliance will power on
immediately).

to require anyone accessing the ProxySG appliance through the front panel keypad to
enter a four‐digit PIN:
1. Access the CLI using the serial port (see “Accessing the Command Line Interface
(CLI)” on page 43).
2. Enter the Administrator username and password when prompted.
3. Enable privileged mode:
a. Enter enable.
b. If configured during setup, enter the enable password.

4. Specify a PIN in either cleartext or hashed format:
SGOS# (config) security front-panel-pin PIN
or
SGOS# (config) security hashed-front-panel-pin hashed_PIN
where PIN is an access code displayed in cleartext, and hashed_PIN is an access code
displayed as hash marks (#).
Restoring to Factory Defaults

You can restore the ProxySG appliance to its factory default settings using the CLI, the
Management Console, or the front panel keypad (ProxySG 510 and 810 models only).

Support and Warranty

All hardware products come with a limited, non‐transferable, one‐year warranty.
Software is warranted for 90 days. Blue Coat warrants that the products will be free from
material defects in manufacturing and materials and perform substantially in
conformance with their published specifications during the warranty period. Any Third
Party products provided under this Agreement shall be subject exclusively to the
licensor warranty for such products.
This warranty excludes damage or failure resulting from abuse, misuse, alteration or

whenever the system is plugged in. To remove power from system, you must unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet. Your system may

open the chassis, or add or remove any non hot-plug components.
Do not attempt to modify or use an AC power cord if it is not the exact type required. A separate AC cord is required for each system power
supply.
The power supply in this product contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not open the power supply. Hazardous voltage, current and energy
levels are present inside the power supply. Return to manufacturer for servicing.
When replacing a hot-plug power supply, unplug the power cord to the power supply being replaced before removing it from the server.
To avoid risk of electric shock, turn off the server and disconnect the power cord, telecommunications systems, networks, and modems at-
tached to the server before opening it.

• When replacing a hot-plug power supply, unplug the power cord to the power supply being replaced before removing the power
supply from the server.

If the server has been running, any installed processor(s) and heat sink(s) may be hot. Unless you are adding or removing a hot-plug compo-
nent, allow the system to cool before opening the covers. To avoid the possibility of coming into contact with hot component(s) during a hot-
plug installation, be careful when removing or installing the hot-plug component(s).
!{ CAUTION
To avoid injury do not contact moving fan blades. If your system is supplied with a guard over the fan, do not operate the system without the
fan guard in place.
Rack Mount Warnings

The equipment rack must be anchored to an unmovable support to prevent it from tipping when a server or piece of equipment is extended
from it. The equipment rack must be installed according to the rack manufacturer's instructions.
Install equipment in the rack from the bottom up, with the heaviest equipment at the bottom of the rack.
Extend only one piece of equipment from the rack at a time.
You are responsible for installing a main power disconnect for the entire rack unit. This main disconnect must be readily accessible, and it must
be labeled as controlling power to the entire unit, not just to the server(s).
To avoid risk of potential electric shock, a proper safety ground must be implemented for the rack and each piece of equipment installed in it.

When rack-mounting the ProxySG, consider the following:

A. Elevated Operating Ambient—If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of the rack
environment may be greater than room ambient. Therefore, consideration should be given to installing the equipment in an
environment compatible with the maximum ambient temperature (Tmax) specified by the manufacturer.
B) Reduced Air Flow - Installation of the equipment in a rack should be such that the amount of air flow required for safe operation
of the equipment is not compromised.
C) Mechanical Loading—Mounting of the equipment in the rack should be such that a hazardous condition is not achieved due to
uneven mechanical loading.
D) Circuit Overloading—Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the supply circuit and the effect that
overloading of the circuits might have on overcurrent protection and supply wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipment
nameplate ratings should be used when addressing this concern.
E) Reliable Earthing —Reliable earthing of rack-mounted equipment should be maintained. Particular attention should be given
to supply connections other than direct connections to the branch circuit (for example, use of power strips).
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)

!, CAUTION
ESD can damage disk drives, boards, and other parts. We recommend that you perform all procedures at an ESD workstation. If one is not avail-
able, provide some ESD protection by wearing an antistatic wrist strap attached to chassis ground -- any unpainted metal surface -- on your
server when handling parts.
Always handle boards carefully. They can be extremely sensitive to ESD. Hold boards only by their edges. After removing a board from its pro-
tective wrapper or from the server, place the board component side up on a grounded, static free surface. Use a conductive foam pad if avail-
able but not the board wrapper. Do not slide board over any surface.
Battery Replacement
! CAUTION
There is the danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly replaced. When replacing the battery, use only the battery recommended by the
equipment manufacturer.
Dispose of batteries according to local ordinances and regulations. Do not attempt to recharge a battery.
Do not attempt to disassemble, puncture, or otherwise damage a battery.
Cooling and Airflow

Carefully route cables as directed to minimize airflow blockage and cooling problems.
For proper cooling and airflow, operate the system only with the chassis covers installed. Operating the system without the covers in place can
damage system parts. To install the covers:
1. Check first to make sure you have not left loose tools or parts inside the system.
2. Check that cables, add-in boards, and other components are properly installed.
3. Attach the covers to the chassis according to the product instructions.

Zielbenutzer der Anwendung

Dieses Produkt wurde in seiner Eigenschaft als IT-Gerät getestet, das in Büros, Schulen, Computerräumen und ähnlichen öffentlichen Räum-
lichkeiten installiert werden kann. Die Eignung dieses Produkts für andere Einsatzbereiche als IT (z. B. Medizin, Industrie, Alarmsysteme oder

Standortauswahl
Das System ist für den Betrieb innerhalb normaler Büroumgebungen geeignet. Wählen Sie einen Standort, der folgenden Kriterien entspricht:
• Sauber, trocken und frei von Partikeln in der Luft (außer dem normalen Raumstaub).
• Gut belüftet, nicht in der Nähe von Wärmequellen und keiner direkten Sonnenbestrahlung ausgesetzt.

• Nicht in der Nähe von Vibrations- oder Erschütterungsquellen.

• Abgeschirmt von starken elektromagnetischen Feldern, die durch elektrische Geräte erzeugt werden.
• In gewittergefährdeten Gebieten sollten Sie das System an einen Überspannungsschutz anschließen und bei einem Gewitter die
Telekommunikationskabel zum Modem abziehen.
• Eine ordnungsgemäß geerdete Wandsteckdose muß vorhanden sein.
• Ausreichender Freiraum für den Zugang zu den Netzkabeln, da diese die Hauptvorrichtung zum Trennen des Produkts von der
Stromversorgung sind.
Handhabung von Geräten

Beachten Sie zur Vermeidung von Verletzungen oder Beschädigungen an den Geräten die folgenden Hinweise:
• Halten Sie beim Transportieren und Anheben von Geräten die örtlichen Gesundheits- und Sicherheitsvorschriften ein.
• Verwenden Sie mechanische oder andere geeignete Hilfsmittel zum Transportieren oder Anheben von Geräten.
• Entfernen Sie alle Komponenten, die sich leicht abnehmen lassen, um das Gewicht zu reduzieren und die Handhabung zu erleich-
tern.
Warnungen zu Netzspannung und Elektrizität

!, VORSICHT
Durch Betätigen der mit dem Standby-Symbol gekennzeichneten Netztaste wird das System NICHT vollständig vom Netz getrennt. Es sind
weiterhin 5 V aktiv, solange das System eingesteckt ist. Um das System vollständig vom Strom zu trennen, muß das Netzkabel aus der Steck-
dose abgezogen werden. Das System verfügt möglicherweise über mehrere Netzkabel. Vergewissern Sie sich in diesem Fall, daß alle Netzkabel
abgezogen sind. Wenn Sie Komponenten ein- oder ausbauen möchten, die nicht hot-plug-fähig sind, stellen Sie sicher, daß zuvor alle Netzk-
abel abgezogen sind.
Nehmen Sie keine Änderungen am Netzkabel vor, und verwenden Sie kein Kabel, das nicht genau dem geforderten Typ entspricht. Jedes Netz-
teil im System muß über ein eigenes Netzkabel angeschlossen werden.
Das Netzteil in diesem Produkt enthält keine Teile, die vom Benutzer gewartet werden können. Öffnen Sie das Netzteil nicht. Im Netzteil be-
stehen gefährliche Spannungen, Ströme und Energiequellen. Schicken Sie das Gerät für Wartungsarbeiten an den Hersteller zurück.

Warnhinweise für den Systemzugang

Gerät für Wartungsarbeiten an den Hersteller zurück.
• Schalten Sie den Server aus, und ziehen Sie alle Netzkabel ab, bevor Sie Komponenten ein- oder ausbauen, die nicht hot-plug-fähig
sind.
• Wenn Sie ein hot-plug-fähiges Netzteil austauschen, ziehen Sie dessen Netzkabel ab, bevor Sie es aus dem Server ausbauen.

War Ihr Server in Betrieb, können die installierten Prozessoren und Kühlkörper heiß sein. Sofern Sie keine Hot-Plug-Komponenten ein- oder
ausbauen, warten Sie mit dem Abnehmen der Abdeckungen, bis das System abgekühlt ist. Gehen Sie beim Aus- oder Einbauen von Hot-Plug-
Komponenten sorgfältig vor, um nicht mit heißen Komponenten in Berührung zu kommen.
!{ VORSICHT
Berühren Sie nicht die rotierenden Lüfterflügel, um Verletzungen zu vermeiden. Falls Ihr System mit eine Lüfterabdeckung besitzt, darf es
nicht ohne diese Abdeckung betrieben werden.
Warnhinweise für Racks

Das Geräte-Rack muß auf einer geeigneten, festen Unterlage verankert werden, um ein Umkippen zu vermeiden, wenn ein Server oder andere
Geräte herausgezogen werden. Bei der Installation des Racks müssen die Anweisungen des Rack-Herstellers beachtet werden.
Gehen Sie bei der Installation von Geräten im Rack immer von unten nach oben vor, und bauen Sie das schwerste Gerät an der untersten Po-
sition im Rack ein.
Ziehen Sie jeweils immer nur ein Gerät aus dem Rack heraus.
Sie müssen für die gesamte Rack-Einheit einen Netztrennschalter einrichten. Dieser Netztrennschalter muß leicht zugänglich sein und über
eine Kennzeichnung verfügen, die besagt, daß er die Stromzufuhr zur gesamten Einheit steuert und nicht nur zu den Servern.
Zur Vermeidung von Stromschlaggefahr müssen das Rack selbst und alle darin eingebauten Geräte ordnungsgemäß geerdet sein.
Elektrostatische Entladungen (ESD)

!, VORSICHT

Elektrostatische Entladungen können zur Beschädigung von Festplatten, Platinen und anderen Komponenten führen. Daher sollten Sie alle
Arbeiten an einer ESD-Workstation ausführen. Steht ein solcher Arbeitsplatz nicht zur Verfügung, erzielen Sie einen gewissen Schutz vor ele-
ktrostatischen Entladungen durch Tragen einer Antistatik-Manschette, die Sie während der Arbeit zur Erdung an einem beliebigen unlacki-
erten Metallteil des Computergehäuses befestigen.
Gehen Sie bei der Handhabung von Platinen immer mit größter Vorsicht vor. Sie können äußerst empfindlich gegenüber elektrostatischer En-
tladung sein. Halten Sie Platinen nur an den Kanten fest. Legen Sie die Platinen nach dem Auspacken aus der Schutzhülle oder nach dem Aus-
bau aus dem Server mit der Bauelementseite nach oben auf eine geerdete, statisch entladene Unterlage. Verwenden Sie dazu, sofern
verfügbar, eine leitfähige Schaumstoffunterlage, aber nicht die Schutzhülle der Platine. Ziehen Sie die Platine nicht über eine Fläche.
Batterieaustausch
! VORSICHT
Wird die Batterie unsachgemäß ausgetauscht, besteht Explosionsgefahr. Verwenden Sie als Ersatz nur die vom Gerätehersteller empfohlene
Batterie.
Beachten Sie bei der Entsorgung von Batterien die gültigen Bestimmungen. Versuchen Sie nicht, eine Batterie aufzuladen.
Versuchen Sie nicht, eine Batterie zu öffnen oder sonstwie zu beschädigen.
Kühlung und Luftstrom

! VORSICHT
Verlegen Sie Kabel sorgfältig entsprechend der Anleitung, um Störungen des Luftstroms und Kühlungsprobleme zu vermeiden.
Zur Gewährleistung des ordnungsgemäßen Kühlungs- und Luftstromverhaltens darf das System nur mit angebrachten Gehäuseabdeckungen
betrieben werden. Die Inbetriebnahme des Systems ohne Abdeckung kann zur Beschädigung von Systemkomponenten führen. So bringen
Sie die Abdeckung wieder an:
1. Vergewissern Sie sich zunächst, daß Sie keine Werkzeuge oder Teile im Gehäuse vergessen haben.
2. Prüfen Sie, ob Kabel, Erweiterungskarten sowie weitere Komponenten ordnungsgemäß angebracht sind.
3. Befestigen Sie die Abdeckungen am Gehäuse des Produkts, wie in dessen Anleitung beschrieben.

Alimentation et avertissements en matière d’électricité

Le bouton d’alimentation, indiqué par le symbole de mise en veille, NE COUPE PAS complètement l’alimentation secteur du système car le cou-
rant de veille 5 V reste actif lorsque le système est sous tension. Pour couper l’alimentation du système, vous devez débrancher le cordon d’al-
imentation secteur de la prise murale. Votre système peut utiliser plusieurs cordons d’alimentation secteur. Assurez-vous que tous les cordons
d’alimentation sont débranchés. Vous devez les débrancher avant d’ouvrir le châssis, d’ajouter ou de supprimer un composant non connectable
à chaud.
N’essayez pas de modifier ou d’utiliser un cordon d’alimentation secteur s’il ne s’agit pas du type exact requis. Un cordon secteur est requis pour
chaque alimentation système.
Le bloc d’alimentation de ce produit ne contient aucun composant réparable par l’utilisateur. N’ouvrez pas le bloc d’alimentation. L’intérieur

• System use and installation: Except for the compact ProxySG 210 models, ProxySG appliances are intended for use in a server room
only. It is not intended be installed in individual employee work areas.
