Mathematics Vision Statement Northmor Local Schools Mathematics instruction forall grade levels and content areas at Northmor Local Schools is driven by the Standards and supported by all staff, students and community. us responsibility is to develop lifelong leamers who demonstrate 21+ Century communication skills Northmor Mathematics Committee Belief Statements Curriculum ‘We believe that - © students leam mathematical concepts best when concepts are related to the real world, ‘+ students need to master basic math facts and concepts sequentially ‘* mathematics should be taught using a consistent vocabulary. ‘consistent expectations concerning mathematics should be maintained throughout school K-12 (e.g., homework) + inorder to engage all students, teachers will teach mathematics using differentiated instruction, ‘© awide range of mathematics courses should be available to provide challenges to meet the needs of all students ‘a system of data-driven instruction, where teachers use technology to focus intervention, needs to be developed, Instruction We believe that — ‘© all mathematics instruction needs to be driven by data from muttiple sources. ‘© in order to develop mastery in mathematics, students first need to be fluent in basic facts; to be able to move on to lateral, creative, and flexible thinking skills; which wil allow ail students to acquire firm foundational mathematical conceptual knowledge. Instruction Continued. ‘© our students can achieve 85% mastery. ‘© students need one uninterrupted period of instruction daily. order for teachers to effectively meet individual instructional needs of students (differentiate), we need smaller class sizes and an increased use of actively involved resource teaches and intervention specialists. Assessment We believe that - assessments should be made ongoing and used continually throughout the schoo! day, * assessments should be both formative and summative and should guide instruction. ‘© an emphasis should be placed on the process used to solve problems, as well as the ‘end product of that process. students need to be able to explain the work of solving a problem. ‘© we need an online assessment system. assessments must include higher level thinking skill. Northmor Mathematics Committee Recommendations ‘Curriculum - (1) Establish a list of expectations and vocabulary to be used district wide. (2) Update curriculum map or scope and sequence. (3) Write a K-12 homework policy. Instruction — (1) Provide uninterrupted mathematics instruction time K-12 {2)_ Provide consistent availability and use of resource teachers and intervention specialists, (3) Create two levels (A and B) within high school math courses. {4) Develop an intervention system for struggling students, (5) Place an emphasis on mastery of basic facts. (Define basic facts.) {6) Provide smaller class size. Assessment — (1) Use quarterly assessments across all grade levels. (2). Develop or purchase a district — wide assessment for ongoing monitoring of student progress.
