A CLOSER LOOK: Focus and the C-segment

The C-segment
Preparing for the arrival of the all-new Focus involves understanding all that this vehicle has to offer
customers in the C-segment. But what exactly is the C-segment and why is it so important? According to
Ford forecasters, global small car sales — B- and C-segments combined — will increase to 38 million by 2012.
To put this into perspective, this year one out of every four vehicles sold globally falls within the C-segment.
Within five years, the B- and C-segments could reach 25 percent of the U.S. market.
This is a golden opportunity for Ford, and the all-new Focus is positioned to appeal to this growing customer
segment. Ford has never been more ready to compete.
The Ford Car Lineup
With the launch of the 2011 Fiesta, the all-new Focus no longer fits into the “entry level” position in the Ford car
lineup. The Ford showroom is evolving and growing, and each of the models has a distinct place, appealing to
different buyer needs. Demand for C-segment vehicles is coming, in part, from a trend called “rightsizing.” This
means customers more conscious of fuel prices, their carbon footprints and their individual vehicle needs are
likely to choose vehicles in this segment.
It’s important to note customers downsize cars — not expectations. Those stereotyping small cars as “basic
transportation” are in for a surprise. The all-new 2012 Focus will offer an array of features and technologies
previously unavailable in this segment.

A CLOSER LOOK: 2012 Focus Compared to 2011 Focus

Focus loyalists coming into the showroom to see the all-new 2012 Focus will find a whole new vehicle. While
the first-generation Focus inspired design elements such as the daylight opening (DLO), which is the window
line that can be seen from the side, this Focus is quite different. The 2011 model is known for being fuel-
efficient and fun to drive with European-inspired ride and handling.
The next-generation Focus builds on this strong foundation — adding more performance-enhancing features
along with cool technology and so much more. These premium features offered on the 2012 model elevate
Focus from an economical starter vehicle to one that more-discerning buyers would love to own.

often caused by unequal wear of the brake rotors
How Active Nibble Control Works

• This counter-rotational force helps reduce
unwanted vibration in the steering wheel
Key Benefits

vibration — or nibble — EPAS counteracts the
nibble and seamlessly cancels it out
• Helps reduce the amount of minor steering
corrections caused by the steering nibbles and helps
provide a more comfortable driving experience

Presentation Tip: Roll-fold Technology

One of the keys to outstanding safety protection with Focus is the side curtain airbags. These airbags are
concealed in the headliner and employ roll-fold technology to help ensure proper deployment during certain
side-impact collisions and rollovers. You can demonstrate how this safety feature functions using a simple
“blow-out” or “roll horn” party favor since it uses the same basic principles as the roll-fold technology.
Give it a try:
• Insert the roll horn into your mouth and inflate it • Explain to the customer before or after you inflate
• Air pressure enters the horn and flows out to unfold the horn — sensors inflate the side curtain airbags
and inflate (or pressurize) the rolled end of the horn in a fraction of a second — what they’re seeing
happens faster than the eye can see
• Consider tilting your head down while inflating the
horn to demonstrate the downward deployment of • While the unfolding and inflating process is nearly
the airbag along the side of the window impossible to see with the naked eye, the rolled
party favor works much the same way

Crash Test Ratings — IIHS

IIHS Tests
IIHS Top Safety Pick
Focus was named a “Top Safety Pick” and received
the highest possible rating in each of the following IIHS Test Test Evaluation Result
tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway
Safety (IIHS).
Frontal Offset G Good

Frontal Offset Test — vehicle impacts a fixed barrier Side Impact G Good
at 40 mph. Only 40 percent of the vehicle’s front
surface makes contact with the barrier. Roof Strength G Good
Side-impact Test — a 3300-lb. barrier moving at
31 mph strikes the side of a stationary vehicle. Rear Impact G Good
Roof Strength Test — a metal plate is pushed against
Stability Control Standard
the corner of the vehicle roof at constant speed. The
maximum force sustained by the roof before 5" of crush
is measured, and then compared to the vehicle weight
to determine a strength-to-weight ratio.
Rear-impact Test — the vehicle’s front seat is mounted
on a platform which is accelerated forward. This
simulates the stationary vehicle being hit from behind
and tests for whiplash injury.

(1) SOS hardware may become damaged or the battery may lose power in a crash, which could prevent operation. Not all crashes will activate an airbag.
