The situational approach, also known like oral approach, was developed in Great Britain
between 1920 and 1930 by the linguists Harold Palmer and A.S. Hornby. They knew the direct
method and thought that it did not work because of the absence of a scientific base, so they
decided to develop an oral approach with the scientific method based on the direct method
for teaching the English language. In 1950, the situational method was accepted as teaching
method in Grant Britain.
In 1960, the situational method was in its splendor and Georges Pittman, an advocate of the
situational approach, with his colleagues developed material of teaching based on situational
method that it was used in Australia, New Guinea and territories of the pacific.
